FINAL NOTE FROM SUZANNE
Dedication
This book is dedicated to my mother, who provided me with a loving and safe environment growing up, full of opportunities and potential. I would not be writing these words today if it weren’t for her. I admire the strength and courage she doesn’t even realize she has at overcoming life’s challenges. I have had the privilege of being witness to the personal growth she has undergone over the last few years.
I love you, Mom!
Happiness is a conscious choice,
not an automatic response.
—Mildred Barthel
Preface
Over the years I have had moments where I struggled to believe in myself and kept myself small. It has been a lifelong journey to build the belief and trust in myself, a journey that will continue until I leave this physical world.
I chose the title Things I Wish My Mother Taught Me because these are life lessons that I had to learn experientially. The title is not a reflection on my mother’s skills as a parent. My mother did an amazing job raising three children. I simply wish my mother had been given this handbook when she was growing up, and she could have passed it on to me.
Having this handbook would have eased my internal struggle, avoided many tears and painful experiences. It would have provided me with a blueprint to create more happiness in my life, fast-tracking me to success and happiness.
I have worked through the different strategies at various times in my life. Reflecting on my experiences four themes emerged. I grouped the strategies into these themes to provide you with your blueprint for success and happiness.
Before you begin this book, I want to share with you the poem that has been the most inspirational to me. It’s about the power of your thoughts and what you believe in yourself. It’s a philosophy I live my life by. Several years back I recited the poem during a job interview. I got the job! I didn’t find out until years later how some in the interview panel had also been moved the poem. I’ll bet you’ll find it as inspirational and moving as I do.

Thinking
Walter D. Wintle
If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don’t;
If you like to win, but you think you can’t,
It is almost a cinch you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost,
For out of the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will,
It’s all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are;
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win
