I dedicate this book to my overly ambitious middle daughter. She has a drive and passion that keep her going, and she doesn’t stop until she succeeds. I admire and appreciate her more than words can say, both as my daughter and as a woman. Thank you.
Preface
I have dreamed of writing a book for most of my life. Every time I would read a book by an experienced author, I’d wonder why I hadn’t started on my own journey of writing. I have compiled this small novel on the bartending life of meeting, greeting, and handling the public every day. It is not an easy life, though it may appear to be on the surface. It is a business that operates not just five days a week but seven. You have to be a very strong-willed and determined person to succeed. The job limits your socializing and your chance to explore the world.
For my heroine Wendy Dawson, however, the bartending life has its adventures. She moved to Middleton Yard to change her lifestyle, and while working hard to keep her Pub & Grub going, she is abducted due to mistaken identity, digs up a decades-old murder, finds a buried treasure, competes in a dogsled race, and takes a chance on romance with a handsome stranger. Each bit of excitement just makes her more thankful for her life and her friends.
Writing a book offers me the opportunity to invent the extraordinary happenings of dreams, to express the outlandish impossible, or to quietly digress to a magical time when anything can happen and appear ordinary. Writing lets me soar to higher limits that I wouldn’t ordinarily experience. It lets me experience unlimited freedom to pour out my thoughts and opinions on paper and shape it into a story.
Travel along with me to see what heights we can achieve.

Abduction
Wendy rolled down the window. She needed a blast of cold country air to revive herself as she headed to work at the great old Middleton Yard’s Pub & Grub. Not that she was complaining. She enjoyed the work and the meeting and greeting of each day’s clientele. Some were regulars. You get tired of seeing them, but they help keep the business afloat.
She knew that time was passing her by, but she did enjoy her work. Wendy had made a decision a long time ago not to settle. Settling would go against her grain, not only as an independent person but also as a free spirit. If she ever got married, it would be for love, and that just wasn’t part of the picture yet.
The right man for her would definitely have to be financially independent. She had always taken care of herself, and damned if she would settle for anything less, as she wasn’t old by a long shot. She was only thirty, but she knew her biological clock was ticking.
When she’d decided to make the big switch from New York City living to this quiet little community, she knew things would be different and even dreary. It certainly wasn’t as easy to meet good prospects. When would the right guy come along? Mother said to be patient—good things come to hard-working people. Hah, right, Wendy thought as she pulled into the parking lot and turned off the engine of her beautiful Charger.
As she put the key in the door of the pub, it felt like a long day was ahead of her. Her work started at sunup and sometimes went until midnight. Clients would always come through the door for one last beer before closing. Don’t people ever sleep?
She threw up the sashes to bring some light in the place, and suddenly she realized she wasn’t alone. Without even turning around, she asked, Who are you, what do you want, and how the hell did you get in here?
Wendy heard a low chuckle as a hand closed over her mouth. A man’s voice said, Don’t struggle, and listen.
She knew if she struggled she could get hurt or worse, so she decided to play it smart. The man slowly removed his hand and said, Now listen and do as you are told.
Wendy nodded her head in compliance, and he said, Good girl.
Wendy eyed the man nervously but decided she could drop him the first chance she got.
He said, Where is the loot?
What loot?
she replied.
Don’t play dumb with me, Wendy,
he said.
She asked, How do you know my name?
He said, I know a lot of things.
He started to walk away from her, and Wendy decided this was her chance. She kicked out, intending to drop him instantly, but he caught her foot and down she went. There was an explosion inside her head. She saw bright lights and then darkness.
She awoke tied at the wrists and ankles, lying in the back seat of an old car. The vehicle was bouncing over rough terrain, so she figured they were on a road somewhere in the woods. Slowly she opened her eyes to get her bearings, only to find herself staring at the back of a head with a short haircut.
The same voice said, You’re finally going to join me in some conversation?
The man chuckled deeply.
Who the hell are you?
Wendy yelled. Tell me what you want right now.
You could have found this out back at the pub if you hadn’t tried your little stunt,
he stated. Now, let’s get started, shall we? I’ll ask you again: Where is the loot?
Wendy stared at him like he was nuts and yelled, I’ve never seen you before in my life! I have no loot! You have me mistaken for someone else.
He stopped the car, leaned over the seat, raised his hand, and cracked her on the side of the head. Everything went dark …
When she awoke again, she was in a dark cabin. The same man was standing by the fire and stirring something in a pot.
So, you have joined the living! Do you like beans, Wendy Dawson? I will untie you if you promise to behave and do as you are told.
Wendy realized she was in a sticky situation, so she nodded her head. He advanced to untie
