INTRODUCTION
What is the significance of the Rainbow in the sky? I researched books and found very few are written on the subject of God’s Rainbow. However, it has great significance to mankind. The rainbow is placed in the sky by the Creator of both the universe and human beings. One might say, "What does the rainbow have to do with human behavior?"
My answer is, Everything.
God reveals His very own personality in His rainbow. His desire is for us to get to know Him—to learn His characteristics and to become more like Him on this journey of life. For Him to fulfill the purpose He has for each one of us, individually, He has given us a free will to make our own choices.
I will share with you an experience in my life that took place August 17, 2007.
I have worked in a large ministry over ten years in Burlington, Ontario. I work evenings, and that night, which was a Friday, I went out on my break at 8:15 pm. I was driving in my car on the North Service Road. I looked both ways at the bottom of the driveway and the road was clear of traffic, my seat belt was on and I was driving the speed limit. All of a sudden, along came a pickup truck, speeding and passing the car behind me. The truck rammed into the back of my car, then side-swiped it, causing my car to roll over three times. I was seriously injured and my car was totaled. My arm was badly injured and I had eight broken ribs. I am thankful for the guardrail that was along the road, or my car could have collided onto the highway below. Witnesses and the police all said I was not at fault for this accident. I required surgery and was in the hospital for two weeks, then was in my mother’s care for a month. I was off work for the following eight months. Back at work now, I am still receiving therapy on my arm.
While I was at home one sunny day, convalescing, I looked up and across the ceiling of my office was a beautiful rainbow. It warmed my heart and I found it very comforting. It happened again a week later—another rainbow across the ceiling of my home office.
I thought about this and God’s covenant with man, and then it came to my mind to write this book and to title it God’s Rainbow and Human Behavior
and how man can become the rainbow of God’s divine character.
I looked to the Holy Spirit to lead me totally and completely in the writing of this book. There is so much inside of me. It is difficult to put into words the revelation of God’s character in the rainbow—His faithfulness, power, unconditional love, perfection, and His covenant promises. God is the only one who is perfect and excellent in all His ways. We can be very thankful that He is a Good God.
CHAPTER 1
R—God Reigns
The R is the beginning letter of the word Rainbow.
In the beginning was God, who is and always was. (Genesis 1)
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God (John 1:1)
The Lord reigneth, let the people tremble, he sitteth between the cherubim. Let the earth be moved. The Lord is great in Zion, and He is high above all the people. (Psalm 99)
The rainbow God placed in the sky was the beginning after the flood, that God made a promise the earth would not be destroyed again by a flood.
Throughout the Bible God makes covenants with the people He loves. The first recorded covenant was marked by an appropriate symbol—the rainbow!
While later covenants applied specifically to the Israelites, this one extended and still extends to every living creature. ¹
God said,
I have set my rainbow in the clouds and it will be a sign of the covenant between God and the earth. (Genesis 9:13)
Note God says, it is His rainbow. He created the rainbow as He did the heavens and the earth and everything in it. God speaks:
Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between Me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between Me and all living creatures of every kind on the earth. (Genesis 9: 14-16)
The Word of God says that Jesus, His Son—who is God the Son—is the same yesterday, today and always, and does not change and because of who He is all things were created. God’s Word changes not—He means what He says—He cannot go against His own character, and His rainbow is testimony of His unchanging Word. This is our confidence, to believe in our hearts the truth
