CHAPTER 1

WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST

A s we begin this journey together, my foundational belief is that the Bible is what we need for every aspect of our lives. It has our answers, our directions, everything. If we run into various situations, we should ask ourselves, What does the Bible say about the situation? before we do anything else. As a result of that dependency, I want you to do the same with me. I want you to grab your Bible and turn with me when I turn. I do this because I want you to make notes and allow the Holy Spirit to speak with you, to give you His revelation, and finally to help you understand what you need to become all God has called you to be.

With that, turn with me to Ephesians 1. I’m going to begin this teaching with an identity crisis. So many of us find ourselves in crisis mode, trying to figure out who we are. I think it is very simple; we are who God says we are, true, but many of us struggle with that for many years. I’ve entitled this part to help us understand, Who You Are in Christ.

So many times within our walks with Christ, we are bombarded with things that are more overwhelming than we can understand. Life throws many complications at us, and we can find ourselves in a place where we are more distant from the Father than we want to be normally. One of the greatest things I began to understand within my walk with Christ so many years ago was that I had to begin to understand who I was in Christ to be able to see where I was going with Christ. There is a difference in that because if you don’t realize who you are in Christ, you’ll find yourself struggling with the same things over and over again and quite simply not able to gain victory over them.

Saints, we need to begin to understand that so many of us realize what we can accomplish within Jesus, but we just don’t go to the next step to accomplish it. We’ll find ourselves in that place of frustration and dealing with the same situations of failure within our lives or moderate successes. We think to ourselves, What can I do differently? Well, I believe we can start tonight by beginning to look at some answers. I am very excited about this Word because the Lord has really birthed this within my spirit even as I am writing. Let’s look at Ephesians 1:17–23 in this chapter.

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. (Eph. 1:17–18)

In other words, the riches of the glory fill every aspect of heaven and impact where we are within the kingdom. What the Father desires for us to do is to be able to bring heaven to earth. And I’m not talking in the material realm; I’m talking about the blessings of who He is as our King. He wants us to be able to understand we are greater than where we see ourselves. Why? Because we are blood bought by the Son of the living God. Hallelujah! This gets me excited to begin to think about who we are in Jesus! Let me show you what I mean in Scripture. Look at what it says in Ephesians 1.

And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. (Eph. 1:19–23)

Now when I look at what Christ is within us, I see that just based on the Scripture we read a moment ago, we have everything we need to be successful in every part of our lives. Stay with me because statements like that can get somebody offended because if they think, Well, I’ve not been there, they may think to themselves, What do I not have? I want us to understand that I believe there are components of what we have within our Christian walks that can be put into a big mixing bowl. However, until we get the right components in place and allow for the mixture to begin mixing things up, we may not get the fullness of what the Father has for us within this moment.

I look at the life of Christ, who lived a perfect, sinless life, and I realize that for Him to be able to do that, He, as us, could not do it on His own strength. In other words, Christ, as us, had to rely upon something that was greater, the precious Holy Spirit, rather than who He was prior to His baptism in the Holy Spirit.

If you’ll look within your Scriptures, one of the greatest things you’ll see is that He began to call upon the Father through prayer multiple times throughout the day so He would be filled with knowledge, wisdom, direction, and counsel, among other things, so He could know where He was to go and what He was to accomplish. He simply was not at the point where He said to Himself, You know what, God? I’ve got this. I can handle this on My own. I’ll check You later. No, rather, He found Himself in places in prayer, needing to cry out to the Father on a consistent basis just to be able to get the next direction for what He was to accomplish.

I look at what happened and that He had a sinless life, and I see this one great thing that took place: He did it because of the power and infilling presence of the Holy Ghost that was within Him all the time. But then I think we find ourselves struggling and wondering how our successes can come. But we don’t put into practice these same things Jesus put into practice. I’ve got to begin to think to myself that if we are lacking in one area—if that mixing bowl hasn’t been mixed up yet—it’s in that one area. We may have the power, we may walk in the knowledge of the Scriptures, and we may walk in the knowledge of a loving relationship with Jesus, but if we’re not in a relationship of prayer, we’re going to miss the fullness of what He has for us within that millisecond He calls us to be. It is in those times that we’ve got to begin to realize and have to begin to say, Father, what would You have me to do? Then He begins to input into us so we will know the direction we are supposed to go.

I love Ephesians because it is so critical for us to be able to understand. There’s one thing I want us to begin to understand, and that is verse 19:

And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.

In other words, we can have a relationship of the Word. I can have the relationship Jesus had. I can understand the divinity of who the Father is. I can try to walk a life that is pure and holy, but if I don’t understand my relationship through prayer, I’m not going to be able to receive everything I need. I’ve got to be at that place where I receive from Him in prayer. This is not me verbally speaking but taking the time to receive from Him so I understand the direction He wants me to go.

In your Bibles, I want you to go to 1 John 5. I want to show this to you very quickly as we begin to look at the first thing to be understood. In Christ you are victorious. Period! The first thing we have to understand is that in Christ, we are victorious. First John 5:4 says this, and I love it so much: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world.

Now we could stop there and be satisfied. We could stop there and understand we’re done. If the Scripture is right in what it says, and it says, Whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world, then we have to understand that if we had the relationship of Jesus, then by default we are born of God. Therefore we overcome the world. It’s that simple. If I know I’ve accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and I say, Father, I ask for forgiveness for my sins. Come in. I receive You, it’s done.

Here’s the second thing. The result by default is when that takes place, the blood of Christ covers me from the top of my head to the soles of my feet. It allows for me to walk within the presence of who He is with the knowledge that comes from the Scripture to say if I have a question, it’s here for me to be able to receive the answer. I just have to receive it in who I am. The result of that is that in the world I was a part of, I then had the authority to look back and say, No more do I want any part of it. No more do I want to deal with the things of the past, but I walk in the victory of who Jesus is because I’m able to see one critical thing: I have the overcoming power because I’m victorious with Christ. But the scripture doesn’t stop there. In verse 4 it says,

For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Oh, I love the verse right there where it talks about our faith because I understand that when we’re talking about our faith, we’re also speaking about our relationship. You see, one of the things I understand to be true is this: we’re victorious in Jesus because He allows us to be victorious. That’s the role model we’re to follow. When we begin to think to ourselves, Well, how should I act within this thought process?, our minds should go to how would Jesus handle the situation. Well, I don’t know Jesus from physically being able to touch Him, so what do I have? I have the representative, which is His Word, to speak to me to give me guidance and direction on how things should be. And if I understand those things to be true, then here’s what happens in verse 4. It says that we’ve overcome the world, because we have a relationship with Christ.

But here’s the second-greatest thing. It says we’ve got victory because of our faith. And it’s our faith that has put us at a place of being consistently and always absolutely at the place of being in victory. When we understand this, here’s the greatest thing: the Devil doesn’t have the right—now stay with me—to intrude where he is not wanted. Period. If you’re a blood-bought child of the living God, the Devil does not have any authority. You say, Yeah but, he’s been given plenty of authority with me. That may be the case, but even if so, we’ve got to understand this one thing. He has that authority because it’s been given to him by us, not delegated by the Father.

So many people refer to Job and say, Well, God told the Devil to go and tempt him. No, the Father allowed that to take place. And the very same thing happens with us in that we will open the door. We decide we might want to peek in to see what it’s about, and if we like it, we decide we might go ahead and shut that door behind us. Well, when that door’s shut behind us, it stops the presence of God from being able to come in to save us from that situation. And so there we are within the grievance of what sin is. Now is that to say He couldn’t save us immediately? Absolutely it means that! He could save us within an instant if we cried out, Jesus. That’s the critical point that we have to understand: wherever we are, whatever we’re involved in, if we cry out for the name of Jesus, immediately He moves. He moves because of the desire of His heart to rescue us from whatever the Enemy might try to put around us. This is what that Scripture says so beautifully. It says this:

And this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Our faith will move us to a place of saying no to the Enemy, and when that door is presented, we will slam it shut and walk the other way. My faith will speak to the door and say, Be gone in Jesus’ name. My faith will look at the door and say, Ha, not today, Devil, and begin to move on. Why? Because the power is within me to understand the authority of what I am within Jesus, but I’ve got to make the choice. And when I look at
