Introduction: It was an invitation from the National Museum of Ireland that was the starting-point of my advanced studies in Irish archaeology, involving an extensive tour of Irish National Monuments. It all started in 1964 with a repeat visit in 1966. Dr.Joseph Raftery,Keeper of Antiquities in the National Museum, provided the necessary information en route, as well as invaluable assistance and directions to the most important National Monuments and the key to get into preserved sites. I am also grateful for the help of many friends too numerous to mention here. My focus of interest was mainly historical-cultural, but in the course of my travels I found myself falling under the spell of the beautiful landscapes of Ireland with its friendly people even in the most remote areas.

The publication of images now half a century old reveals undisturbed views of an era before traffic and tourists. It was the time of sleeping sheep on the road, haycocks in the fields and people at the roadside to talk to, without the proliferation of houses across the Irish landscape. Therefore many views are now unique, unrepeatable. The book is a documentation of the heritage of the mid nineteen-sixties. Only a selection can be shown but nearly all the pictures speak for themselves. The text explanations focus on the place-names and the meaning of objects, as well as social facts of importance. There is a certain preponderance of images of the Atlantic coastline, but that is simply due to the sheer, impressive beauty of the counties of the West of Ireland.

My cameras were PLAUBEL 6x9 and VOIGTLAENDER 24x36, films AGFA and ISOPAN B&W.

Irish Passage-graves are the most striking neolithic monuments built in either huge mounds or cairns. They date from the second half of the third millennium B.C. The cruciform stone-built chambers are connected with the outside through a passage. The mound is surrounded by a ring of often decorated kerbstones. Their typical location on high ground is impressive. In the Boyne Valley on the Meath/Louth county border are the three famous mounds of NEWGRANGE (above), KNOWTH and DOWTH (below). They have however decreased in height in the past few centuries and their appearance today is flatter than it once was because of stone-picking for the building of roads and houses. Newgrange is still 10 m high and since its excavation 1967-70 has become a public tourist attraction. Dowth was badly misused by local landowners. It suffered an early ill-construed excavation in 1847 and lost most of its beautiful decorated
