    PROLOGUE

Decades disastrous bring this piece outstanding for if not these thorns in my flesh and those flakes in the eyes of my fellow compatriots, I won’t have thought it enough. Final judgment awaited has docked like weariness had not taken us that far.

Deep rooted sorrows can’t be by-gone till we wholly realize a fate less momentum. Wounds unhealed will heal if I personally will stand firm and light a lantern independently unlike the expectations of many and so will you. Recurring curses will fade away like heart desires… sooner like a spirit disappears into the atmosphere.

The done and pending yokes making us perturbed are presented to the omnipotent creator. The worthiest pains born to crowns of hatred and antipathy are presumed showered with meaningful dough passing over to rejoice beyond the sea of red waters.

We amass no power in the chains of evil yet hope is another heaven. Flames of self determination will burn desolation within us afflicted by the like fate to implant success. Take to these pains, make conclusions and take a message without embarrassments pertaining to names, occurrences or beliefs you will find in it.

Cheerfully awake the captive using this gateway through pains to eternity.

    PART ONE

    CHAPTER ONE

    I

Julius rode to school one fine afternoon of Friday in the month of July. The sun shone with its oppressive rays which couldn’t compromise eliminating perspiration. His head was in a porch leaving a portion of his handsome face to the passersby.

He was dressed in a tracksuit and wore eye glasses as well. The bonds of frequent wind, the enemy to sight in the camp were under tightened by nature.

As children do with speed, he alighted at the gate. The school was another grave in no cemetery. He glanced multiply and none came to sight. He laid his unsteady bike on the ground to test the padlock if it wasn’t locked.

He squeezed his hand through a square among the several squares of wire mesh the gate was made of and turned it side by side like testicles of a bull in readiness for castration.

Eyes couldn’t permit the answer from the hands calling for peeps some more but to no alteration. He made two successful steps back, lifted the bike and a thought struck him to rush to that new opening they had for their own use at night where insecurity loomed.

His legs were so light landing on the pedal and that speed as fast too as if racing. He got into the compound after opening the gate and climbed onto his bike thirdly as the door returned on its hinges engulfing the silence in the lone compound.

He rode once around the parade ground but absolutely nobody was available. He laid his bike again and peered through the window of the staff room, thus his eyes landed on the globe and the vacated chairs.

He rushed to their class and opened the door with faith like he was a servant of silence.

Finally, he was in his classroom browsing over notes written while he was away.

~ I might have missed good lessons.

He thought yet he was a patient of absenteeism with its medicine not discovered yet which he was not advised to.

He had written a brief letter to convince his class teacher. Teachers can’t write back responding to excuses giving what they taught to students.

He would mind his business rightfully instead. He opened gateway, a book of mathematics he was holding, an exercise book and began copying notes.

After completing the second paragraph there was a light knock on the door which seemed womanly. Of course it was but Julius thought of his classmate wanting to play tricks on him.

Better if he had thought of a knock from a child. He rose and threw his eyes on the tore nylon sacks the windows were covered with. His eyes were welcomed by the opposite building and the horizon.

No human being anywhere. He had a point to confirm… is anyone at the door or not?

He leaned against the wall and sent his right hand to pull the door quick.

Ah! he barked jokingly if he might plant fear in who he didn’t know.

    He was ashamed.

The sight was there to correct the faulty brain. A young lady he never knew before stood.

~Sorry for the joke. You are welcomed, he apologized but ashamed.

She smiled and made a move in. Julius closed the door after her; then followed with his eyes glued to her neck.

~Make yourself comfortable my angel, he said; I am glad to have a visitor today.

He had to smile to disclose his warm welcome. He did indeed.

She sat at a desk nearby. Julius sat closer beginning to construct a few sentences of knowing each other.

    She noticed and smiled mockingly.

    ~Is anything wrong? He questioned.

    No! and she faced sideways.

Julius removed his porch and eye glasses to expose his handsomeness. Pen stuck between his fingers, the gateway and an exercise book, he sat on.

It’s exactly what amused her but she was shy to tell it. Julius had not recognized.

~Whom are you called darling? Julius asked.

There was no lining of rudeness on her face.

It’s not necessary to ask whom you were not expecting her name, she responded.

He raised his eyebrows and said, its necessity is that you are fit to be here!

~It’s good to know each other because those who have met are bound to meet again elsewhere.

The speeches were not enough to reveal any sense of romance.

~Don’t let me down my girl, he added.

She then designed a white lie.

    I am Nyanchar, she said.

A name given to girls born on journeys.

Julius was shortly confused but as fast as he entered the compound if you had seen him, he realized. He got reminded of the normal concept of some South Sudanese girls.

They like playing tricks on men not to tell names as simple as such.

~ I know children of nowadays are born on and along streets, he said.

You may choose the name for fantasy.

    A lighter abuse.

~ I need the very name your parents gave you.

Julius said and threw a rough gaze.

She laughed instantly then looked at Julius straight in the eye.

    You are funny, she concluded.

~ This has nothing to do with fun, come on… you keep me bored by deceiving me.

    Julius was bitter.

He dragged closer and sent his hand onto her shoulders to test if she loved. She moved away like the leaves of Mimosa pudica plant which close when touched. Julius had nearly fallen.

He shook his head and said, don’t let me down; you mean a lot to me, remember?

    I am Charity, she said.

She had substituted wrath she caused Julius for the situation to resume its potential.

~Thank you Charity for your understanding.

She nodded simultaneously. There was a thing about her teeth, so white and how she dressed, the smartest of the time.

Her beauty robbed attention from Julius. He was busy in thoughts.

What are you thinking about? she asked.

The question entered the right ear and exited through the left ear. Not even a rough answer.

She dragged closer and touched him on shoulders. He flinched.

~Sorry honey, he said immediately he turned.

His heart pounded vigorously gathering joy in him. Still, she didn’t understand what was disturbing him.

That’s why it’s harder to retrieve other person’s character if you had not stayed with them before.

Please if you hate my presence I shall leave, she said jokingly but serious.

A day’s meeting and the same day a disaster, he mimicked to tune within. He uncovered his teeth in no hesitation.

~It’s okay Charity, I was pondering over how to get notes, he said.

He was a Hare in deceits.

Don’t do it again or if you expected someone else let me know, she grew the talkative of the hour.

He thought of how to lure her into a relationship. Her eyes twinkled quarterly after a raised eyebrow waiting for the results of her tricks.

Julius also wanted to know how she cared by doing so and there she had sympathized.

~Thanks for your concern; I wish our meeting is blessed to be for tomorrow.

Her eyes blinked around. She couldn’t see any nearer face unless the voices she heard from the next classroom.

She shivered with shyness and sooner than later gathered strength. She didn’t need those words to be spoken when someone’s ears were closer and hollow enough to receive.

She released thin linings of rudeness onto her face to scare Julius.

What do you mean? she asked pretending.

It was a Rabbit playing tricks on Hare. He was not that weak to be shaken.

He confided in his love for her than that of his mother and siblings.

~I love you and it began the time I set my eyes on you, said the love maniac.

Those words landed sweetly on her heart. He was the first man to tell her such. His smartness had paralyzed her but she controlled her temper to remain a respectful girl.

"Would you tell me your name before you tell me that nonsense?

Do I know you or knew you before?" she said.

She knew him but there she was.

Tell me your name, she chattered.

Behold the sky welcomed Julius’ eyes. He was so sorry more than King Saul who was a great sinner. They both could not lose each other.

He set apart his lips to apologize.

~Sorry for the delays… call me Julius, he said apologetically.

She was a gecko in nods and reluctant to utter a syllable.

    ~I love you Charity.

He said and waited for her response which was not so soon.

~Don’t let me down; can’t you see I love you? He added.

She gazed roughly and laughed like the one who don’t love. There was no dislike in her heart though.

~Don’t let me down my girl, please say something.

    Julius wanted an immediate answer.

That’s all you will get once you try some South Sudanese girls. You must be fatigued looking only for the word, yes to your love. She could not disappoint him anymore.

    She would reveal her affection.

I love you too Julius, she gave in.

Unbelievable but it was said for real. Julius was as happy as a liberated civilian on their independence day.

His lips were short enough to cover his teeth. Dancing and singing weren’t good enough yet Charity waited for the outcome.

After a long pause, he made a lovely move as they dug into their arms and celebrated that union.

~Thanks charity, am relieved, he said… I won’t have slept tonight.

Really! she exclaimed and they retired into another hug.

Huge happiness is shown by slight laughter with a slice of doubt and disbelief. It was time to disclose the hidden.

~It was your beauty I thought of when you said I delayed.

They shared laughter. Books were lonely at the desk.

Reading was surpassed by another essential scenario of romance. It had dragged closer to sunset.

He collected his books. He had not studied. They left the room consecutively.

Julius took his bike, climbed it and said, Get seated.

She pretended as if she had not heard and went on. Julius climbed down and they dragged ahead in a uniform pace.

The sun had its face orange as it sunk. Julius had admired her madly to stare at her continually.

Eventually they were at the gate in the group they shared as refugees were organized in groups. They diverged.

    Bye, she said.

Julius did in return. They kept thieving glances till they couldn’t see each other anymore.

    II

Julius had not found his mother home. He ate his dinner and retired to bed.

Thoughts flooded his brain and drained. He had flashed to his past relationship with Jaclyn, his classmate.

He had suffered attacks from her relatives which he didn’t know would be in his relationship with Charity. Of course it’s common in relationships.

Once was a time Julius had gone for an exam. His classmates were away and there their bench missing.

It was nowhere to be seen in their classroom so he dashed to the nearby classroom. Moving from bench to bench and row to row, his eyes landed on a bench he thought was theirs.

~Can I have a look at this bench please? He enquired.

The boys retrieved anger on their faces.

A huge boy older than the other boys said, This bench isn’t yours.

~It’s not mine but I need to know if not mine. You may rise if you won’t mind.

Mockingly the huge boy said, You have found your bench, hmm!

Go away; fools have not begun using benches, he added. If you can’t understand go to hell.

    Anger boiled within Julius.

In a raised tone he said, you are wasting my time if it’s not mine I shall leave.

The huge boy stood to his height and pushed Julius harder grazing him on his knees. He was badly hurt.

Go dog, is it food to quarrel over it like this? the boy abused.

Julius was like a sheep in the wild, so lonely. He rose and jumped instantly towards him, his right hand accurately aimed.

The huge boy was standing still laughing when a hard
