I would like to dedicate this book to God, who allowed me to accept the challenge to lead and to endure the hardship of change in our church.

I would like to thank my husband, Scott, and children, Josh, Ryan, and Angelina, who faithfully supported my endeavors; my parents, Rev. Charles and Mildred Oliver, Jr., who have been the godly leaders in my life; and my church family. All came together to inspire me to share a fragment of my life with those who need a change and to become a strong leader for Christ, my Lord and Savior.

    CHAPTER 1:

    Accepting the Challenge

A CHANGED HEART CAN COME from only one profound experience: accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Through the Holy Spirit, the molding of the new heart begins.

God doesn’t change, but you may ask if He likes change. He must, or He wouldn’t have made different seasons or something as simple as a caterpillar that turns into a butterfly. The life of a Christian is a transformation into the likeness of God. This transformation may take a lifetime, much like a caterpillar in a tightly woven cocoon transforms itself over time into a miraculous, beautiful butterfly. Even though some caterpillars may never make it out of the cocoon alive and die while trying, there are a few that endure the struggle. In the end, they are released and spread their wings into the warm air. Those that survive enjoy a freedom of flight that is admired by all creation.

Spring would not be the same without these marvelous sightings of the wonderful insects that God created for us to view. However, the steps in this process don’t happen overnight. This is also the same in a church that goes through a transitional phase. Change may take a lot of time and endurance for some.

Change is all around us. Every day, something or somebody changes, but when change occurs in a church, culture shock may occur. If God wants His church to change, it must be needed, even though His Holy Word doesn’t change. We must seek to glorify Him at any cost and struggle to change every day. Allow the potential for greater change to happen as He works in your life and the life of a church.

We have choices that Scriptures consider a narrow way. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it (Matthew 7:14 KJV).

As disciples of Christ, we must be obedient to Him through our choices. Therefore, your chances to accept these few choices usually come in a time in your life when you least expect them—when your life is in need of change. You can either run from God or run to God. We are indeed in charge of our choices.

Upon accepting the challenge when God calls you into His will, you better have your whole armor of grace on, or you will be scarred from head to toe. Never in a million years would I have thought that God would call me, a plain, poor country girl, to be placed in a position to represent such a noble profession. But God prepared me ahead of time—before I even realized it. God knows our future and whom He can use. For many are called, but few are chosen (Matthew 22:14 KJV).

    As a little girl, I
