    Answer Key

Thanks be to God who equips us with all we need so that we may abound in every good work. To my wonderful husband for his immeasurable support… Never Surrender. To my beautiful daughter who exceeds all expectations. To my parents who always believed.

And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.

O nce upon a time in a land not far, far away, but surprisingly close to you, lived a brother and a sister, and although they had perfectly good names, they never called each other by them.

E-mouse, Brother said aloud, reading over a paper he had received last week at Sunday school.

Sister, seated across the kitchen table, gently corrected him. I believe it’s pronounced, ‘Ee may us.’ She expertly texted a message on her cell phone with her right hand while eating breakfast with her left. Then she continued, It’s a village seven miles from Jerusalem.

What happened there? Brother asked, stuffing his breakfast into his mouth as fast as he could without choking. He really didn’t want an answer from his sister, because he worried it might make them late.

Sister paused to wipe the crumbs off the corner of her mouth with a small white napkin. "It’s not so much what happened there; it’s really all about what happened on the way there," she answered, smiling to herself. Knowing her brother wouldn’t be able to resist asking for more information, she went back to texting.

Glancing at his wristwatch, he tried not to ask. Finishing his breakfast ahead of her, he gulped his last piece of food, slammed his empty cup down on the kitchen table, and shouted, Done! He pushed his chair away from the table, but as soon as he stood up, curiosity got the best of him. Uhhh, he mumbled to himself, grasping his watch with his other hand and holding on to it, as if that would somehow give him more time. What happened on the way to Emmaus? he dared to ask as quickly as he could.

"Jesus, on the very day of His resurrection, walked with two of His disciples on the road to Emmaus. Beginning with the books of Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them the many things about Himself in the scriptures. Well, today is going to be like a ride to Emmaus."

Yes, today… the ride. Can we go now?

She raised her eyes and saw Brother, who was now standing right next to her, which coincidently made him a few steps closer to the front door. He tapped his foot several times and stared at her with his head slightly tilted, arms crossed, eyes unblinking.

Sister merely replied, I’ll be done in a minute. She thoroughly chewed the last piece of her morning toast and dropped her eyes back down to finish texting. Sister was in no hurry. Sister was like that.

Okay, okay, I’ll meet you outside! Brother was not going to let her slowness deter his enthusiasm. He had spent many days preparing and planning out every little detail of this day. Brother was like that.

You see, this day was not just any day, mind you, but a much-awaited day that had been circled on the calendar and marked with a big X inside it, and it was finally here.

A beam of sunlight, seizing its first opportunity, broke through the early morning rain clouds, and painted a vibrant rainbow in the sky. Noticing it through the kitchen window, Sister smiled at the sight of it. Must be a special day, she thought. She hit send on her cell phone and was going to linger a little while longer, but she heard the sound of Brother’s voice coming from out on the front porch, urging her to hurry up.

Waiting was not something Brother liked to do. She knew it would be unwise to delay for even another second, so she slung
