For over thirty years I have been involved in trying to protect the natural habitat of native animals from being destroyed. Natural habitat is the only real place that the many animals, birds, insects and plants can survive. Many extinctions have happened and are continuing to happen at a rapidly rising rate. This is due mainly to overpopulation of our planet. Forests are being cleared for timber and to plant crops to feed the ever expanding global population. Unless this problem is dealt with soon, we will be facing a catastrophe of extinction that will leave our World changed forever and may even threaten our existence. At the very least, it will severely degrade our quality of life. This children's book is an attempt to introduce to them the huge challenge facing their generation. I have tried to make it light-hearted and easy to follow. I hope kids everywhere will learn something from this book. Malcolm Thomson

    Saga of the Vegvisir

    by Malcolm Thomson

Way up in the highlands of Scotland, in the little fishing village of McDuff, the time was 1 am and everyone was fast asleep. Everyone, except little Fergus Stuart that is!

In the darkness of the village, a single light twinkled. This light came from Fergus’ bedroom, where he was sitting up in bed, his head buried deep in a book with the title:

    Monsters of Myth and Legend.

Well, Fergus had just got to the page about Nessie. This monster was special, because it was supposed to live in the Loch (Scottish for lake) that was only half a days walk from his front door. Being a great monster fan, this was almost too much for Fergus to bare. He decided that enough was enough and if no one could find this monster, then it was obviously up to him.

Fergus began making plans. Then, as quickly as Fergus had made up his mind, the book slowly slid out of his hands as he drifted off to sleep. (Yes, you guessed it - to dream about Nessie, of course).

Two days passed. Then on a cold, frosty and foggy morning, Fergus was packing his case for school as his mother called out for him to come down and have some breakfast. Well, Fergus did not have time for any breakfast as he was stuffing his suitcase with all sorts of bits and pieces. Yes, this was the morning he was going in search of Nessie and no one, not even his Mum, was going to stop him. As quick as a flash, Fergus bolted down the stairs and after sneaking past the kitchen, called out to his Mum that he couldn’t eat breakfast because he was late for school.

No one had ever seen Nessie. However, Fergus was determined to prove he existed. With this in mind, Fergus began trudging steadily across the swampy ground that led to the big Loch.

Two hours passed and Fergus was beginning to wonder if the fog would ever lift. It was at this moment Fergus heard a very strange noise coming out of the thick fog ahead of him. ‘Good grief,’ thought Fergus, ‘I wonder what on Earth that could be? ’
