FIELDS GONE BY
we might not have cared so much
had we not somehow known
those smokey fields where battles played
so quickly overgrown
with dry thin grass and thorny shade
that only shadows touch
and we might not have known so much
had we not felt or heard
the clash of angry men and seen
a bloody mockingbird
limping through those fields obscene
where only shadows touch
if only those who perished there
upon that dry thin grass
had known the awful price absurd
that they would pay to pass
the shadow of that mockingbird
ahead for us to share
now shadows shadows everywhere
our souls are overwhelmed
by hollow wind
