For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

    —Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

    Thank you, Father.

This book is dedicated to three of the strongest women I’ve ever known—my mother, Margaret, my sister, Nicole, and my Granny Mattie—who are all now my guardian angels.

I want to thank my cousin Sophia for being the first person to read and believe in this book when it was just scribble-scrabble in an old, beat-up blue notebook.

There are so many names to list. I don’t want to leave anybody out, so I want to thank each and every family member, friend, coworker, and associate who has prayed for me, encouraged me, and inquired about this process. I greatly appreciate it!

    OBJECTIVE

Welcome to a university of students who came from all over the country to attend college in Atlanta, Georgia. These students are trying to prepare for the future but face many obstacles getting there. They are experiencing many different things that ordinary college students go through every day, but as outsiders looking in, there’s more to it than exams, sororities, and partying.

    CHARACTERS

ALAYSIA. She is a rich snob whose father is a millionaire who gives her anything. She feels like she is better than everybody. (Sophomore)

DEAN HARPER. She is the dean of students and handles all the issues on campus.

JAQUEZ. He is the star basketball player of the school, and he uses females, only wanting to get them in bed. Everybody respects him because he is so popular and is striving to be in the NBA. (Junior)

LAMONT. He’s a homosexual struggling with coming out because he’s afraid of what people will say or think of him. (Sophomore)

LENA. She is smart but easily influenced by people. She has low self-esteem and is just trying to find her way. (Freshman)

MALIK. He is business-minded and attractive. He is trying to pursue his singing career. (Sophomore)

MONAE. She is always stressed and worried about everything going wrong in her life. (Sophomore)

MR. TAYLOR. He’s the owner of Javour, a café on campus that is a popular place for students to hang out. He keeps the kids in check from an old person’s perspective.

PATRICE. She is levelheaded. She is the SGA president of the school. She is on the right path to success and tries her best to keep everybody else on track. (Senior)

PROFESSOR JOHNSON. He is a very cool instructor. Students think they are on the same level as him because he’s young and hip. He understands their struggles because of his past experiences.

PROFESSOR PHIBBS. He is a professor who feels education is everything and that, as one of his students, you will learn in his class.

SHAWN. He is about getting money, money, money—the fast way. He’s in college because he has to be, or he will be thrown in jail because he is on probation. (Sophomore)

    LENA. Hi, Mr. Taylor.

MR. TAYLOR. Well, hello, my child. How are you today?

LENA. Not so good. This biology exam is really working my nerve. I tried to understand it, but I can’t get it.

MR. TAYLOR. Oh, you just have to practice and work hard at it, suga’. I have to go cook, so I will chat with you later.

    LENA. Okay, Mr. Taylor.

Jaquez, Malik, and Alaysia enter Javour.

JAQUEZ. So, Alaysia, when are you going to let me take you out?

ALAYSIA, laughing. You are not on my level. When you can afford to buy me the finer things, then you can get at me. Until then, it’s not going down.

JAQUEZ. You not all that anyway. Fake Beyoncé wannabe.

ALAYSIA. Oh please, whatever. Don’t get all heated because I’m not like all these other chicks that bow down when you come around. I wasn’t fake when you was trying to take me out just now.

MALIK. Hey, hey, break it up. Chill out, chill out. Come on, Jaquez.

JAQUEZ. Forget that broad, man. She not about nothing anyway.

ALAYSIA. I must be about something; you trying to holla.

JAQUEZ. Girl, go run into a wall.

MALIK. Eh, man, chill. Let’s go.

Patrice enters Javour, where several students are playing pool, sitting around socializing at the many booths and tables, playing spades, and enjoying one of Mr. Taylor’s good ol’ juicy burgers.

PATRICE. Excuse me, everyone. (Patrice claps twice loudly to get everyone’s attention.) I spoke with Dean Harper about the homecoming events and told her our ideas about the homecoming concert. After days of contacting people, we will be having Ne-Yo, Future, and Trina. We hope this will be a great, exciting homecoming this year! (Excited chatter erupts among the students.)

MALIK. Man, did you hear that?

JAQUEZ. Yeah, and what? I just want to see Trina with those sexy hips of hers, maybe even try to smash. (He chuckles.)

MALIK. No, man, this could be my big break; eh yo, I could sing for one of them and maybe get a deal.

JAQUEZ. You need to get over it and stop worrying so much about this deal.

MALIK. Well, you need to stop worrying about going to the NBA. Don’t knock my dream.

JAQUEZ. Don’t hate on me because I’m going to knock Lebron James off the map and pursue my dream of becoming the next MJ.

MALIK. You think it’s all about you.

    JAQUEZ, shrugging. Basically.

MALIK. Well, you continue to think that way, because you will find out that you’re living in a dream.

JAQUEZ. Well, whatever. Guess who I banged last night?

MALIK, rolling his eyes. Who, man?

    JAQUEZ. Monae.

    MALIK. Stop, man. You lying.

JAQUEZ. Nah, eh yo, she a pro wit it too, if you know what I mean.

MALIK. What? Naw, man, not Monae. I never would have thought.

JAQUEZ. Exactly, man. I’m trying to tell you, these girls play the innocent role. Once you get them alone away from their friends and stuff, it’s a whole different story.

MALIK. Dag, man, I can’t believe you was with Monae.

As Malik and Jaquez continue to talk inside Javour and play pool, in walks Mellissa. She walks to the counter to order a burger.

MALIK. Ey yo, how you think she look?

JAQUEZ. She aight. I’ll hit it.

MALIK. That’s all you ever think about.

JAQUEZ. Well, can you think of something else?

MALIK. Yeah, like commitment, honesty, love.

JAQUEZ. You know, you sound real soft right now. Eh yo, I’m out—got a class. (Jaquez leaves Javour.)

    MALIK. Aight.

Monae enters to talk to Alaysia. She is overly excited to tell Alaysia about her evening. Monae is a sophomore from a small town outside of Virginia.

    MONAE. What’s up, girl?

ALAYSIA. (Alaysia sees Monae headed her way looking very happy. Alaysia is not thrilled to hear her antics today.) Hey, girl, what’s going on?

MONAE. Girl, I have something to tell you.

    ALAYSIA. What?

MONAE. I, um … (She pauses and then whispers.) had sex with Jaquez last night. It was great. He told me how he always wanted to be with me, girl.

ALAYSIA. What? (She looks appalled.) With whom? Please tell me you are lying.

MONAE. No, why? (She looks puzzled.)

ALAYSIA. Monae! (She says with anger.) You know how Jaquez is. He is
