      INTRODUCING

      ‘BAHASA UPDATE’

      Malaysia’s policy of unifying the various races through a common language, namely Bahasa Malaysia, has been implemented for several decades now with a good measure of success. But its twin goal of making B Malaysia a language of knowledge, the sciences and the professions, still lies far away beyond the horizons, though not quite unreachable.

      The Bahasa Update

      While most people in the medical profession (and recently prominent figures in politics) recognize the importance of English for our continuing education, we cannot run away from our commitment to mastering B Malaysia if we claim to be loyal citizens of this country. Most of us are humble enough to admit there is plenty of room for improvement in our daily and official communication. This is a crucial step in the right direction. The next is to do something about it. For this reason, Berita MMA will try to keep members up-to-date with Bahasa terminology, especially those relevant to the field and practice of medicine, through a regular ‘Bahasa Update’ column. To make it more meaningful and comprehensible, I will broach the subject from the angle of concepts and ideas, rather than merely provide an endless listing of what might appear to be ‘misspelt English terms’. We won’t go too heavy (we’ll take the ‘light-headed’ approach). A pretest which you can try out will be offered on and off (to add some excitement and a dash of nostalgia to the good old exam blues of yesteryears) and a post-mortem feedback will be given… . in English, of course! (What better way to learn B Malaysia than through English? . . . and vice versa).

All you have to do is to provide the technical and layman terms in Bahasa Malaysia for the English terms listed below, and check out your answers as provided. Give yourself one mark for each correct answer. (No need to minus marks for wrong ones!)
