About this ebook

Author Greg Spencer was born again at the age of seventeen. God spoke to him several times in the following years about the plan He had for his life. Following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Spencer has been equipping the saints by teaching them who they are in Jesus Christ. Now he presents In Him, a yearlong weekly devotional to help Christians receive the revelation of Jesus.

Each new week, Spencer offers a personal reflection or message and offers appropriate Scriptures to frame his ideas. In Him communicates that God the Father has provided Christians with an inheritance and eternal life in abundance. Through these weekly devotionals, Spencer shows how to succeed in the pursuit of and knowing of God.

Heartfelt and inspirational, In Him makes it clear that following in the Masters footsteps means spending time with Him, learning of Him, and demonstrating Him to the world.

    Final Thought

    Acknowledgments

I’ve read many books, and I believe the acknowledgment section of any writing may say more about the author than the writing itself. In it we find the writer’s inspiration, the people who helped make the work possible, and one thankful heart. No writing—no matter how small or large—is done by only one person, and this book is no exception.

I first want to say that I wouldn’t have chosen me to write this, but the Lord did. Several years ago the Lord began to teach me about who I am in Him, and this book is a portion of what He has shown me. Knowing the Lord and who we are in Him is not for knowledge alone, but to be walked out in real life experience. So first and most of all I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who is my inspiration and help.

I also thank my wife, Karla, who has supported me not only in this endeavor but also in life—by my side all the way. I owe so much to my mama, who gave me such a solid foundation in Jesus Christ; I am forever grateful to her. To my brothers and sisters, thank you for too much to mention. To the men and women who have sown into my life over the years … thank you. And last but not least, thank you to the reader; may the same sprit that inspired me to write this book reveal to you the Lord of glory and who He has made you in Christ Jesus.

    Introduction

As I look back over my life, I see so many opportunities that I let slip away. The opportunities I speak of are the ones that involve my walk with the Lord. Because of a self-centered life, I missed a lot of what God had for me at the time. My dad and mom were both devout Christians and raised us to know right and wrong, but being brought up in a Christian family didn’t exclude me from making bad choices.

I was saved at the age of seventeen, but I didn’t follow after the Lord in all my ways. During the next several years, I selfishly did some things I wanted to do. Bad teaching, no teaching, and giving in to my own selfish desires robbed me of precious time with Jesus. But in my heart, I knew something wasn’t right about my relationship with the Lord.

As I studied the life of the Israelites in the Old Testament, I realized how their on-again-off-again life was like mine. Then the Lord spoke to me and said, You can’t live this life I’ve called you to in your own power or with your own smarts. He told me I needed to know Him and know who I am in Him. We will just flounder around through life if we don’t truly know Him. The Lord told us in Hosea 4:6 that we are destroyed for lack of knowledge—the knowledge of Him—for only by knowing Him can we know who we are.

So I committed myself to the Lord—to know Him and find out who He made me to be. These past years of seeking Him have been so rewarding and full of His glory. The further down the road that I’ve traveled with Him, the sweeter the journey has become. I am amazed that at every turn God is so much more than we think or even imagine. I have written the following pages to assist you in your pursuit of knowing Jesus and who you are in Him.

Although there is still much for me to learn and my journey is not yet complete, I pray there is a spark in these pages that you can light your candle by. May you receive the revelation of Jesus as you read and study these pages, and may your life become a flaming torch for His glory.

    Week 1

I was a great sinner, but Jesus is a great Savior.

When I was lost in darkness and could not see to find my way out, Jesus came and rescued me and set me free. For what I could not do, God did by sending his Son, Jesus Christ. He not only brought me out of darkness but also gave me power over the darkness. I am now a citizen of God’s kingdom, the kingdom of light, and I reign in this life through Jesus Christ, my Lord. One day I will be released from this mortality and given immortality to live with my Lord and Savior forever.

We’re all eternal beings created by God to live forever, and there are only two choices where we can spend eternity: heaven or hell. The question is this: which direction are you headed? Everyone born into the human race has sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). We all need a Savior—someone to rescue us from our dilemmas—and God’s Son, Jesus Christ, is the only one who qualifies.

Romans 10:8–10 says, "the word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. That is the word of faith that we preach, and if you confess with your mouth to the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the
