    INTRODUCTION

    Our spiritual journey is not a destination; it is the experience of each moment as we walk through life. The spiritual journey requires dedication and trust in God. We allow each moment to unfold naturally and allow God to guide us on our paths, knowing we are in the right place at the right time. I have chosen to use the word God as a way of identifying a higher source of peaceful, loving energy, and is not meant to convey religious ideas, but to help simplify the unseen connections of the spiritual journey. We should never waste moments in regret or complaining about others. Our daily experiences should be joyful moments filled with divine thought and love for our fellow man and all of God’s creatures. The spiritual part of our being keeps us connected to God, and we hold within us the energy of love that helps us create peace instead of hatred and violence.

    There is a strong spiritual essence, the silent knowing deep within our souls, which eliminates fear and sends forth the happiness and joy of being a divine child of God. We stand in greatness, no matter what it looks like from the materialistic view, and live each moment as our authentic self—meaning the true aspect of our very being, the true connection to God and that which is truly who we are and cannot be denied. If we are not living as our authentic selves, then we are living the illusion of false selves, meaning we are pretending to be someone else and denying our unique spiritual essence created by God.

    The spiritual journey is a road of self-discovery. I have listed six key concepts that help us see the real attitudes and beliefs that may inhibit our path, restrict our authentic selves, keep us living in fear, and keep us out of balance.

    My example of self-discovery is writing this book. I have discovered boundless amounts of patience through the editing process, avoidance of things and people that rob my writing time, total belief in my ability to complete this book, and lastly, the value of meditating every day, which keeps me focused and connected to God.

    The six concepts, listed below, are discussed further in the chapters that follow. One point I need to make is that there are many subheads connected to these core concepts, and I try to explain all the material simply and succinctly as possible.

    * giving meaning to the spiritual journey

    * taming the ego and freeing the spirit

    * replacing fear with love

    * compassion for self and others

    * releasing negative energy

    * balancing our lives

    My experiences have led me to believe that time goes by very fast and that we need to live in peace and harmony. Otherwise we are stuck in the negative ego energy of limitation. All things are possible with God, and everyone on this earth has a purpose for his or her life. God did not create us to be failures, and we are blessed by God with talents that need to be shared with others. My life is at a turning point. I will be fifty years old very soon, and I feel a sense of urgency to accomplish more and extend kindness and compassion to as many people and creatures as humanly possible. I refuse to be limited by age and continue to learn new things and meet new people. I use my time to pray for others, extend myself in compassionate service, and express my spirituality by letting people know that I am a peacemaker and not an alarmist.

    I began to recognize my spiritual path at a very young age but was not aware of the spiritual process. I had no guidance, and I remember feeling as though I was missing something in life. I started expressing my deeper feelings through poetry. In 1978 I wrote my first poem as a response to rejection. I have included some of my favorite poems in this book. Some are at the end of chapters and some are sprinkled within the text as ways of lending deeper meaning to an idea or thought or connecting to my life experiences. I have also included short introductions that relate to the material of each chapter.

    I did not realize how important my poetry was to me until a very spiritual person introduced me to an exercise aimed at finding out what is really important to us: Begin by listing fifty important events of your life. Start with your childhood and move into the present. Meditate and pray about your list. Then list the ten most important events of your life and the effect they have had on you in terms of the development of your spiritual journey.

    My sadness began when I felt out of place during elementary school. My parents insisted on sending my siblings and me to a Catholic school. Even though there was lots of discipline, bullying still went on, and I was one of the targets. It was then that I withdrew into my own shell, avoiding normal childhood interactions and living in an imaginary world. My imaginary world was a safe place where I could question God about why life was confusing and why I could not understand what was happening to me. I felt school was boring, and I felt uninspired in the classroom and with life as I saw it. My teachers thought I was slow and not paying attention, when in fact, I was thinking in terms of what was next. I was an A student; I was just bored.

    As I matured into high school, I turned off the sadness and used my athletic talent as a natural way to feel happy. I found participating in sports invigorating. Later, in college, I realized how important being athletic was to my well-being and my spiritual journey. Team sports gave me the opportunity to socialize with people of similar interests. I often wish that someone had explained the spiritual journey to me so that my early education could’ve been more enjoyable and I could have embraced the pitfalls of feeling awkward.

    Awkward is a term we sometimes use when we don’t fit in with others’ way of seeing life—the norm, as we call it. Feeling shy and awkward can keep us from socializing with others and lead to feelings of despair. I feel a strong desire to share my story and poetry with people in hopes of inspiring them to connect with God, find their authentic selves, begin and maintain their spiritual journeys, and embrace the awkward feelings. I am proud of my foibles. I love listening to Christmas tunes in the summer and eating Chinese food on Thanksgiving Day. I am proud to be authentically awkward.

    Later in life I met other people who shared their experiences with spirituality and introduced me to books and seminars about developing spiritual qualities beyond what I thought was possible. I started to find out that a healthful and balanced lifestyle helped
