INTRODUCTION

Were there times in your life especially during periods of desperation, when you’ve cried out to God needing to know what to do? You’ve ask God, Where do I go from here, and what do I do? You may have wondered if you would even be able to hear him speak amidst all the chaos and confusion surrounding you. The answer is a resounding yes you can. First you must settle this simple truth in your mind. God has been, is and will be speaking to you throughout your life time. God is speaking to you in every tree you see, in every animal, every breeze you feel, every ray of sunshine, in every drop of rain and every breath you breathe. God has this conversation with each of us every day. He’s speaking to you today. Are you listening?

CHAPTER 1

IT’S IN THE BOOK

In the book of Genesis God said,

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:26).

So things of the earth that God had made to creep, to swim in the sea, to fly in the air and cattle, he was giving man dominion over. Now, once more for understanding. So everything creeping on the earth, swimming in the sea, fowls flying in the air and cattle, God was giving man dominion over. Clearly this leaves you and me out. We don’t creep, we don’t swim/live in the sea, we don’t fly, and we are not cattle. So, man does not have dominion over man. I do realize from time to time we may run into individuals who behave themselves so improperly they might very well put us in mind of some sort of creep. Even so being, God did not give us dominion over those improperly acting creeps.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:28).

Genesis 1:28 is not a license for you to think that God is now confused or has changed his mind about what he has given man dominion over. You don’t have dominion over anyone that is made in the image and likeness of God. Simply put, you don’t have dominion over anyone that looks like you. As for God being confused, that will never happen because he would have to change to become confused.

God created in man the ability and the know how to be fruitful, to multiply, to replenish the earth, and subdue it. Adam was created in the image and likeness of God to fulfill God’s purpose for mankind. I believe Adam purposed to fulfill his part in being fruitful, multiplying, replenishing, and subduing the earth. I believe he purposed to obey God. I also believe Adam went about not giving any thought to disobeying or making plans to disobey his Creator. With all God had instructed Adam to do, I believe he found no objections to following God’s commands and was not looking for any.

The Bible makes it clear that an objection to what God had said was presented to Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. Eve being deceived by the objector (the Enemy) accepted the objection. Man Adam, personally objected when he accepted what was taken from the tree in the midst of the garden. Objections to doing God’s will, will come to you as well. Don’t accept any of them.

CHAPTER 2

KNOCK OUTS AND PUNCHES

The Bible tells us that the serpent was subtil, more so than any beast of the field. During a time in the garden the serpent approached Eve with a question, his subtility in full form. Eve had never heard or seen such a display as this. She listened to his question. This question came in the form of a hidden objection. The serpent had said to Eve, Yea, hath God said you shall not eat of every tree of the garden? Satan knew this because he had been somewhere listening when God said it. In your Bible study 101 you learned that Satan was cast down to earth before Adam and Eve were created.

So with this question the serpent had captured her attention. Nothing God had ever done or said in the garden had ever been called into question until now. This was all new to Eve. So she responded with what God had instructed concerning the trees in the garden. Eve never knew this hidden objection once accepted came with a devilish punch. She accepted the objection.

1.   The first punch came with the power to see in a contrary way.

…the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes,

2.   The second punch came with the power to think contrary.

…and a tree to be desired to make one wise,

3.   The third punch came with the power of disobedience.

…she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat,

4.   The fourth punch came with the power of persuasion.

…and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Genesis 3:6 is incorporated in paragraph.

With this act of disobedience came the challenge to man’s first purpose: dominion.

CHAPTER 3

FAMILY

God created parenting. He gave us earthly parents as a first authority figure here on earth. You and everybody you know were born to parents. Obeying your parents came with the reward of a promise. The promise being a long life and a way established for things to go well in your life. The Bible says, Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. (Ephesians 6:2-3).

You and everybody you know that utilizes their common sense wants to live a long and enjoyable life. God put this desire in man. He loves us so much that even after man sinned in Eden, God gave us his help to live a good long natural life. In 1 Peter, the Bible speaks to us of the person who wants to see good days and be a lover of life. That person is encouraged to speak no guile, to eschew evil, do good, and to seek and ensue peace.

The promise of things going well with us was also included in this promise found in Ephesians 6:2-3. In this chapter and verses God once again is bringing to our attention the importance of obeying authority. God uses our parents because they symbolizes a type of loving authority. In the book of Genesis God was the loving authority to Adam and Eve. They needed only to obey him. To many loving parents today, an act of disobedience may be viewed as dishonor towards them.

At the beginning of this chapter we spoke of the word honor. What does this word mean? What was God telling us to do? Before we look at the definition of this word let’s look at a man God greatly used to help define this word for us.

CHAPTER 4

GREATNESS WITH NO OBJECTIONS: NOAH WEBSTER

Noah Webster was the man God used to write the American Dictionary of the English Language. I believe God’s leadings were still and quiet as he directed Mr. Webster in the writing of this book. A book that would serve many thousands of people. Noah Webster, also known as the Father of Christian Education said,

In my view the Christian education is the most important and one of the first things in which all children under a free government ought to be instructed. …no truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the bases of any Government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people.

Mr. Webster is also quoted as saying Education is useless without the Bible. The first quote is found in the preface of Noah Webster’s most famous Dictionary. the American Dictionary of the English Language. Published in 1828 it is said to be based on the Word of God. God had given Noah the tools (the mind, ability and just the want to) to write this Dictionary. The Dictionary is a gift, a good gift. The Bible says, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, (James 1:17).

In 1833 Mr. Webster would even produce his own modern translation of the English Bible. He would take out words and phrases he thought to be particularly offensive to women and children. Webster’s Bible would not be well received because of the public’s loyalty to the King James Version. However in 1809 Mr. Webster did write an article titled The Peculiar Doctrines of the Gospel, explained and defended. This writing was very well received. There was one thing said in the article that I found to be particularly, delightful and encouraging. Mr. Webster wrote: The truth is enough and anything else is too much.

Mr. Webster had decided that America needed a mother tongue and set out to write this dictionary. It is documented that he learned 26 languages including Sanskrit, a language spoken in India which is believed to be a mother language, from which many languages descended. He also learned Anglo-Saxon in order to accomplish this great task.

This Dictionary is documented to have 70,000 entries and in 1888 this unabridged Dictionary was even advertised as a library. History records that the Dictionary has sold more copies than any English book. The Holy Bible being the number one best seller the world over. Mr. Webster spent more than 20 years doing the research needed to complete this task.

Noah Webster is also known for starting the first law school in America. When Noah Webster finished this Dictionary he was over 70 years old. With all the above in mind, let’s look at some objections Mr. Webster could have had to following the Spirit of God, in writing this Dictionary.

1.   He could have said no, I can’t do that because they will say I’m trying to do what Samuel Johnson did. (Mr. Johnson’s accomplishments are well worth noting. He wrote the first Dictionary of the English Language).

2.   Mr. Webster could have said, it will take too long.

3.   There are too many different languages.

4.   I will never find all the information I need.

5.   I will be dead before I’m finished. Forget it.

Mr. Webster let none of these possible objections and challenges keep him from this God-given task, which I believe was part of his destiny. When I first began to study the Bible, I clearly remember God telling me to get the Dictionary. Of course it made no sense that I should get a Dictionary, because to my way of thinking it was not a spiritual book. Little did I know. I thank God for the Dictionary. Objections may have come to Mr. Webster but they were not his focus. He is known for the things he did that brought glory to God. God helped him to keep his focus.

Now that we have a little back ground on the man God used to give us a great definition for the word honor, let’s see what God says about honor. Surely God knows a thing or two about honor.

Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; for them that honor me I will honor, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. (1Samuel 2:30)

Due to the Merriam brothers buying out the unsold copies of the 1841 edition of the American dictionary of the English language, in 1982 Webster’s dictionary would formally become known as Merriam-Webster Dictionary. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary the word honor is defined with these words.

1.   High estimation, to reverence

2.   A token of esteem, a mark of respect

3.   Dignity, distinction, exalted rank

4.   Reputation, good name

5.   Loyalty and uprightness

Now let’s read this definition in regards to our parents in this manner.

1.   Render to your father and mother reverence and high estimation.

2.   Let them be to you a
