Grands Visit the Stars - Cecile Boyd Bullock
Chapter 1
Grandma and Grandpa Get Ready
When Grandma and Grandpa received a call from their daughters saying that they wanted to bring the Grandchildren over for the weekend, they were excited. They haven’t seen their grandchildren since they moved out of New York. Sean, Mia, and Emjay were coming in from Florida. Keon and Kymani were coming in from Pennsylvania. They were all due to arrive at their grandparents’ house by late Friday afternoon. Grandma and Grandpa have been planning all week for their grandchildren’s arrival. Grandpa remembered their last visit and how Kymani said he wanted to visit outer space. Grandpa couldn’t get him there, but he figured he’d try to get him as close as he could. Grandma busied herself preparing the childrens room. She got out all of their toys and washed them. She pulled Mia’s dolls from the top of the closet and put them in the wash. That night at dinner, Grandma and Grandpa talked about their grandchildren. They talked about how Sean was the MVP on his football team and Keon giving a handsome smile for his class pictures. Grandpa laughed when he talked about Mia putting her hands on her knees and saying cheese when she takes pictures. Grandma tells Grandpa how the teacher said Kymani has a hyper problem. He’s adventurous, love!
Grandma says to her husband.
Chapter 2
The Grands Arrive
Charell showed up the next day at noon with Keon and Kymani. Keon runs straight to Grandma. Twinny Twin!
Grandma shouts as she picks him up and hugs him. Kymani is still apprehensive about letting mommy’s leg go but lets go when Grandpa asks him to come to him. Grandpa picks Kymani up and gives him a big hug and kiss. What about me?
Charell says as she drops the bags. Oh honey, we’re sorry,
her parents say as they both reach to hug her with their other arms. She kisses her parents back and asks, Where’s the rest of the gang?
They should be here shortly,
Grandma says. Their plane landed twenty minutes ago.
I miss them,
Charell says. Grandma sits the boys down to cookies and milk. When the doorbell rings, Grandpa says he’ll get it and heads for the front door. He opens it to find Sean, Mia, Emjay, and Charise on the other side. Grandpa!
Sean shouts as he runs and gives his grandfather a big hug, almost knocking him down. Sean, please!
his mother says only to be quieted by her father. It’s all right, honey. I miss him too!
her dad tells her. He looks down and sees Mia holding on to his leg. Hi Sweet Pea!
Grandpa says and reaches down to pick her up. With his other hand, he takes Emjay from Charise. With the whole gang having arrived, they head for the kitchen. Hi babies!
Grandma says as she gathers more glasses and plates for more milk and cookies. When Keon sees his cousin Sean, he jumps down from the table and runs to him. Hi Sean!
Keon says as he gives him a big hug around his waist. Even though Sean is twelve and Keon is five, they are the best of cousins. Kymani pats a seat next to him at the table for Mia to sit. Mia climbs up on the chair, and they both hug and kiss. Kymani is four, and Mia is three. They too enjoy each others company. Emjay’s only eighteen months, so Grandpa slides the high chair over to the table and places him in it. He rolls up Emjay’s sleeves and places a cookie on his tray. Charise and Charell stick around long enough to have a light lunch before they leave. As soon as the front door closes, Grandma, and Grandpa are hit with a flurry of questions. Grandpa, Kymani is still talking about going outer space. Can you tell him he’s too small to go?
Keon says. Well, as a matter of fact, Keon, Grandma and I have a surprise for all of you after dinner,
Grandpa tells him. A surprise?
Mia says in her mouse-like voice. Yes, baby girl,
Grandma says. It’s something for all of you.
They all at once try to guess what the surprise could be. It’s a puppy!
Keon says. No, it’s a kitten!
Mia says in her squeaky voice that always seems to bring a smile to Grandpa’s face every time he hears her talk. I bet it’s the hamster that I asked for, right, Grandpa?
Sean insists. No, Sean, it’s not a hamster,
Grandpa replies laughingly. Is it a spaceship, Grandpa?
Kymani asks. No, Kymani, it’s not a spaceship either, but you are close,
he says. Emjay blurts out a flurry of mumbles, and the whole table starts to laugh. I see Emjay’s guessing too!
Chapter 3
What’s for Dinner?
OK, that’s enough guessing,
Grandma says. Sean, Keon, and Kymani, I want you three to go in the backyard and play while I get Mia and Emjay cleaned up.
Yes, Grandma!
the boys reply. They all jump down from the table and run outside. I wanna go play with the boys!
Mia cried out. She tucks her tiny arms under each other and begins to pout. Look at her,
Grandpa says with a smile on his face. Let her go play, honey.
Grandma tells him fine and shouts for the boys to wait for her. Grandpa smiles as Mia jumps down from the table and runs after the boys, shouting for them to wait for her. Grandma takes Emjay out of his high chair while
