About this ebook

Christmas Eve is coming soon, but there is no joy in the Kriegen home. A year prior, Clara lost her husband, Joshua, to a sudden heart attack, leaving their son, eleven-year-old Donald, without a father.

Now, Clara and Donald both feel lost, and Clara is dreading Christmas. When yet another tragedy strikes, she cant help but question the goodness of God. How could God take her husband away? How could He take her sons dog, just before Christmas? How could He leave them so alone?

Just when things seem darkest, however, a bit of good luck lands on their front porch. A mother and daughter want to rent the old cottage in the Kriegen backyard, and Clara certainly needs the cash.

Theres something different about Miriam Schenken and her daughter, Shirley. When Donald falls ill, they seem to be Claras saving grace. Christmas seems like it might be a disaster, and yet a miracle occurs that reignites Claras passion for her loving God. The holiday season is a time to rejoice and give thanks. It is a time for miracles if only we believe.

It was shortly before 6:00 a.m. when I forced my tired body to rise up out of my bed. Another night of lying awake since 3:00, I thought with a sigh. I grabbed my robe from its usual place and turned slowly down the hallway to enter my son’s bedroom. Oh, Donald! I exclaimed. How long have you been sleeping there on the floor?

Aw, Mom, Rusty was crying for me again. He needed me! Didn’t you hear him last night?

Come on, Sweetie. It’s already time to get up and get ready for school, I whispered softly, as I knelt down beside my son, quickly surveying Rusty for any signs of a worsening condition. Rusty looks like he’s sleeping comfortably now. Let’s give him some quiet time, okay? I said coaxingly, as I gently wrapped my arms around my sweet boy in a lingering hug. We need to get a decent breakfast in you too, young man! I added, trying hard to sound positive. You only picked at your supper last night.

Donald was reluctant to move away from his sick dog. He had curled-up next to Rusty again, gently stroking his head, as he looked up at me with sad, pleading eyes. Please, Mom, can’t I stay home today? Nothing’s going on at school that I can’t miss. Besides, Rusty needs me more!

You know you can’t miss any more school, I reminded him gently. You got so far behind last year when Dad died, I said with a lump in my throat. Do you remember how hard it was to catch up to the rest of the class again? I managed to ask as my voice cracked. Oh no. Please don’t start crying, I thought, as I took a deliberate, deep breath.

It will be a year now at Christmas since I lost my husband… and Donald his father. Is it possible that it will really be a year? Joshua, a man of only 43 years, dying of a sudden heart attack… leaving his wife and child all alone in the world.

My thoughts came back to rest on my son and his faithful old friend. Rusty’s forced, heavy breathing was noticeable, as I watched my dear
