    Life without Easter for once. Imagine that. I entertained the thought to skip Easter this year.
    No crowded shopping centers, no Easter bunny, no jelly beans and marshmallow
    candy, no lamb shaped from butter, no kielbasa, ham, or dyed eggs. No Easter parade. No church services!
    No blessed basket of food before Easter eve's start to enjoy Easter Sunday! Not even a new suit, hat, or bonnet.
    I'd be the Easter crank. Skip it. That's just what I had in mind after Christmas Day. Skip Easter.
    Who needs the flu, the hassles, the traffic and parking lots at stores, the expectations we have of one another,
    and, the picture-perfect card with the entire
    family, or else! No decorations? Not even the usual rites of Spring's baseball season with the Detroit Tigers?
    Forget it! All of it.
    A trip to Easter Island to escape this holiest day of the calendar
    year seems so nice.
    However, as lessons were learned, skipping Easter comes with consequences. It
    isn't accomplished as easily as I had imagined.

    Lessons were learned, and, even came alive with fresh, vibrant ways as my idea was explored
    amid the craziness, chaos and frenzy that marks this holiday tradition.

    Easter would not be the same, indeed. For sure.

      This story about Skipping Easter had me wondering at first, but, when I began reading the short, simple but so human anecdotes that run through the book, I began to see how things are not always as they seem. Like Easter, and Father Larry Ventline’s proposal to skip it this year. Then, he draws the reader into the importance of celebrating the Holy Week events of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday.

      His thought about going to Easter Island near Chile, for Easter is fascinating but hardly enough for him to finally skip Easter, after all.

      The stories here connect us with the city where he grew up and which he loves. It is easy to remember with him the streets and neighborhoods, factories and schools, ethnic and racial groups and all the vibrant life of Detroit in the last five decades.

      The stories are so very human. But there is always a presence of God in them because the author lives in that presence himself and all that he experiences in events and people necessarily includes an active awareness that God is part of everything and everyone in our life. Without realizing it immediately we discover as we read these stories that we are being provided with spiritual guidance and nourishment.

      Sometimes, I am sure, we all need explicit and very straight forward spiritual direction. But for an easy and gentle intrusion of the spiritual into our lives we could not find anything much better than connecting with the people, events, issues, and need to celebrate the Easter season that Fr. Ventline writes about. As we read, we find ourselves moving with him into rich spiritual reflections.

      I hope that many people manage to discover this book dedicated to the late Bishop Ken Untener who worried about our culture and time losing the Triduum of Holy Week.
