Nurturing Intelligence: How to Encourage Learning and Develop Capacity
()
About this ebook
The current generation of parents is under constant pressure to find ways to maximise the intelligence of their children as they prepare them for an
unknown future. In Nurturing Intelligence: How to Encourage Learning and Develop Capacity, Alison Willis, PhD, presents the latest research
from the forefronts of education, psychology, and science in a series of concise anecdotes and pictures that are easy to understand.
This artistic expression of Williss work and findings brings together years of academic research and study, her experience as a teacher and lecturer, and
lessons gained from interacting with other cultures. Her quest has been to understand the human condition of learning; fundamentally, learning is a human
trait, so understanding its essence will allow parents to better equip their children for the future. In addition to her professional interests, Willis has the
grounding that parenthood affords, enabling her to intimately understand the needs of students and their parents throughout the educational process.
Nurturing Intelligence is designed to reduce the angst that parents experience concerning their childrens opportunities and success as it brings clarity to
the topics of intelligence, learning, and education.

A series of conversations sparked my intrigue. They could have been everyday chit-chats, but somehow there was a thread that was tying them all together. The thread was tugging me towards a journey of inquiry.
A seemingly innocent comment stopped me in my tracks. So, do you sit down and teach her?
I was a young mother. In a previous life, I had been a high school English teacher. So it seemed an appropriate question: did I take time to sit with my daughter so she could learn?
Still, I was astounded that learning was perceived to occur when a child was sitting down, a teacher was actively transferring knowledge, and prescribed activities were being administered. I filed this conversation in the significant compartment of my mind.
Many years have gone by and my quest to understand intelligence and learning continues. Nurturing Intelligence: How to Encourage Learning and Develop Capacity is an artistic expression of my work and findings that brings together years of academic research and study, experience as a teacher and lecturer, and lessons learnt from travelling to and mixing with other cultures to observe learning.
