About this ebook

Spit and Spirit is a collection of poems that celebrate life. It contains poems that sing of our shared experiences as human beings. The poems in this book are about people we all know in one way or another, about the natural world that we all share, about the art of poetry that lives in every human heart and excites every human mind, and about the Spirit that breathes fire and life into every living being.

Spit and Spirit is the score of the spit of everyday life and the Spirit of that wondrous, mystical, interminable life that will always be a mystery and a miracle for every poet-- every human being. It is a collection of poems about sinners and saints, about dirt and divinity, about you and me.

    Introduction

This book was inspired and prompted into being by Father John Rebel, who told me for years that he was still waiting for a copy of [my] book—a signed copy. He waited in this realm until March 17, 2013, when he was called home to the realm of the Spirit. I did not want him to wait as long in that realm to receive this book.

It has also been written for all the beautiful people with whom I’ve been blessed to share the wondrous journey of life: For my family and my friends, who have given me words, inspiration, encouragement, and, above all, love. For my sister Helen Erickson, who has been the mid-wife of many of these poems. For my brother-in-law John, who encouraged me to publish and answered all of my many computer questions. For my brothers Steve and Bill and my sister-in-law Beverly, who have reaffirmed in me the joys of nature and farming and living simply. For all of my professors in the English Department at Youngstown State University who awakened in me a passion for poetry. For Nancy McCracken and the Northeast Ohio Writing Project at Kent State faculty and fellows, who taught me so much about writing, sharing, and being. For my St. James the Apostle Parish family, who have inspired so many of these poems and have allowed me to share my poetry with them. For the Spirit that sparks all life and all creativity.

This is a collection of poems that bridge the space between this natural world of spit and that other realm of the Spirit. It is an expression of my experiences here and of my awareness of there. It is a gathering together of people I’ve known, whom you’ve somehow known too; of events that have impacted my life and shaped my thinking and, in some way, yours as well; and of retellings of stories I’ve heard and read so many times—stories with which you are also probably very familiar. It is my way of swapping the spit and sharing the Spirit of life with you. It is my way of connecting to you and to the Source of the One Life that flows through all living beings. It is a gift given in gratitude for this life and for the blessing of all of you—both those of you who have come a long way with me, and those who are just now joining me on my journey through it.
