    Introduction

This book began on May 18, 2009, although I did not know it at the time. On that brilliant, beautiful spring day my husband, Vernon, was diagnosed with Leukemia. At that gut wrenching moment, flames began to consume and nearly destroyed all of my normal life. In the months that followed, life became one of highs and lows, twists and turns as my family rode the roller coaster called Cancer. Then on August 17, 2011, my life took another dramatic dip when I became a widow – in my 30s with three children to care for. What I’ve learned from then to now is that God is so faithful. He has taken what was meant to destroy, and out of the ashes of my previously normal life, He is rebuilding with hope and purpose. Isaiah 43:2, 4 says, When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. You are precious to me and honored, and I love you. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.

One of the greatest ways He has shown me that He is with me is through His Word, the Bible. My quiet times with Him have gone to a deeper and more intimate level. I crave this time with Him. As I pour out my heart, my hurt, and my needs to Him, He responds with His loving embrace and wise direction. Another way He reveals Himself to me is through the support of others. I’ve had the blessing of being involved with the Coping with Hope Cancer Support Group, near my home. They consistently prayed over and encouraged my family during my husband’s illness. When he passed away, they graciously let me join them in offering that same support to others. That is where this book comes in. I had frequently written as an outlet and to share what God was teaching me during Vernon’s illness. One day I was asked if I would be willing to write devotions for Coping with Hope. I have never aspired to be a writer, but I felt God nudging me down this path. What you hold in your hands are the devotions that God has provided. These devotions come directly from my time spent in His classroom. I simply repeat what He is teaching me. He has seen me at my absolute worst and loves me the same as when He has seen me at my hopeful best. He gives comfort, hope, purpose, and love without exception. If you have picked up this book, I can guess that you or someone you love is going through the flames of hard times or rummaging through the ashes of what’s left, trying to rebuild. I understand exactly where you are! Let me assure you that God is right there with you. He loves you as no other. You are precious and honored in His sight. He will take whatever you have left – whether great or small – and He will transform your life into something that rocks your world and the world of those around you. He is for you! I pray you find encouragement and peace; but I pray most of all that you find His presence very real in your life.

    Why 40 days of devotions?

The number 40 has significance in the Bible. Look at things associated with the number 40:

    • Noah was in the Ark while it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Then Noah waited another 40 days until he opened a window, beginning the world’s fresh new start.

    • Moses’ story has multiple instances. Moses was 40 years old when he ran away from Egypt after killing an Egyptian who was mistreating Israelites. He then spent another 40 years tending sheep for his father-in-law in the wilderness before going back to Egypt to rescue the Israelites. Moses was on the mountain with God receiving instructions, including the Ten Commandments, for 40 days. His face still radiated brilliance from his time with God for 40 days following his time on the mountain. When Moses sent spies to check out the Promised Land, they were gone for 40 days. Because of disobedience, the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years before their children were allowed to enter the Promised Land.

    • Goliath, the giant, taunted the Israelite army for 40 days before a young boy named David killed him with a slingshot and a stone.

    • Elijah traveled for 40 days on a single meal (angel delivered no less) to Mount Horeb for a special encounter with God.

    • Jonah told the people of Nineveh they had only 40 days to repent before God’s judgment would come upon them. Because of their obedience, they were spared.

    • Jesus spent 40 days and nights in the wilderness being tempted by Satan in preparation of His teaching ministry.

    • Jesus appeared to many
