Barbara lived in Massacjusetts as a child, moved to Connecticut in grade school and lived in Hamden, CT, until she married. After her husband Douglas returned from Korea, they moved to Troy, NY, where they lived until he was transferred to Syracuse, NY. In 2001 they moved to Martha’s Vineyard permanently, to the old Victorian house in Oak Bluffs that they had owned since 1971. Her husband, Douglas, is a well known artist on the island. She attended Vassar College for two years. After marriage she returned to college when the children were small and attended Russell Sage College in Albany nights and, later, Syracuse University, from which she was graduated in l966. During her life she has been Society and Woman’s Page Editor for the New Haven, CT, Journal-Courier for three years and worked for a public radio station and an advertising agency in Albany, NY, writing radio and television commercials. After graduating from Syracuse, she taught in grade school in Marcellus, NY, for 24 years until retiring in 1990. She received Teacher of the Year Award from the Marcellus, NY, Rotary Club in the 1950s. Barbara always has been active in her church and is in the choir and Unity Club of the Federated Church in Edgartown, MA, where she was chair of the Missions Committee for eleven years. She was president of the Syracuse Vassar Club and was very active in the Syracuse League of Women Voters, serving on the Board in many capacities. She is also a past president of the League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard. She is secretary of COMSOG and also secretary of the Oak Bluffs Homemakers Club. For some years she has been a member of the Oak Bluffs Public Library Thursday Writing Group. She has two sons, Douglas, Jr., and Jonathan, and one daughter, Jennifer, all married and living in the Midwest, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She enjoys cooking, preserving, gardening, reading, swimming in the summer, traveling, and, of course, writing.

    Preface

It is a privilege, as well as a pleasure to publish my second book of poetry.

From my very early days of writing poetry and prose for my own benefit, I continued on a path of writing as high school paper news editor, Society and Women’s Page Editor of the New Haven, CT, Journal-Courier, and later, to writing radio and television commercials for an Albany, NY, advertising agency.

After going back to college as a young mother and graduating from Syracuse University, I taught English and other subjects to fifth graders for most of 24 years.

In 2001 my husband and I moved to Martha’s Vineyard to live, and I became a member of the Oak Bluffs Library Thursday Writing Group. What a treat. This group has worked with me and inspired me all along my path, and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Rev. Judy Campbell, Kay Mayhew, Debbie Dean, Brigitte Lent, Allen Janger, Charles Blank, Ilka List, Peggy McGrath, Laurel Chapman, Else Membreno, Andrea Rogers, Linda Wilson, and Ellen Eisenberg. Thanks also to the many friends who have urged me to do another book, among them Bob and Bess Stone, and Bob and Susan Stevenson. Not least of all, many thanks to my faithful editor, Mary-Jean Miner.

    I owe particular thanks to
