Ama Kuma was born in Orlando, FL and moved to Polk County, FL at a young age. As a child, she loved to read, sing, dance, and climb trees. Her passion for language and art continued to grow as she grew older, and she loved to learn about people from all walks of life. She studied English at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Africana Studies at New York University before returning to Polk County to teach elementary school. Ama currently resides in her hometown of Orlando where she enjoys writing, painting, singing, playing the piano, and going wherever the wind takes her. Nandi’s Unexpected Gift is her first published book.

I t was a rain-drenched Friday in Polk County, Florida, and nestled neatly near a group of palm and oak trees was a little neighborhood where roosters often crowed early in the morning. At the very end of the winding street that was Mahogany Avenue, stood a cute little blue house where a little girl named Nandi sat next to her bedroom window. With her hand in her cheek, she tried counting all the droplets of water that seemed to stick to the outside of her window with invisible glue.
That’s a lot of water falling from the sky, she thought to herself as she gazed out at the sheets of rain hitting the ground like tiny hammers. I wonder how many drops are gonna fall before the storm is over,
she wondered aloud. Maybe a million! Maybe a trillion!
Unlike her friends, she loved watching and listening to thunderstorms. The thunder never made her jump, and the sight of lightning never made her flinch. To her, it was like God was giving the whole neighborhood a shower, a nice gentle scrub to clean off the dirt from the week. Usually, she’d sit at the window and play solitaire with her lucky deck of cards or dance along to her grandmother’s jazz music that played softly in the living room. Sometimes she’d even make up her own words when the music didn’t have any. But today, she didn’t feel like doing much of anything. Today, she couldn’t wait for her mother to
