    Conclusion

    INTRODUCTION

Writing a book is hard work, especially a book written about the kingdom of God. For anyone to think that they would be able to explain the kingdom of God in one literary work would be sheer haughtiness and foolishness. The Lord Jesus explained the kingdom of God in parables; certainly, if the King Himself did not give an explicit description of His kingdom, no earthly man is qualified or equipped to do so. The objective of this book is to give the reader a peek, or glimpse, into this marvelous kingdom that our Lord came to affirm. It is the author’s intent to do more than simply inform; indeed, if it is possible, the intent is to pierce the hearts of those who are seeking to understand the Lord God in a much deeper way. Today, few books are written that provide a clear understanding of God’s kingdom, and even fewer that can weave together the principles of earthly kingdoms with the concept of the great heavenly kingdom. In this way, this book will be a unique work. This book is written with the intent to assist the reader in transitioning from an earthly governmental mind-set to a spiritual governmental mind-set. Most religions—indeed, most churches—are attempting to help the members make a transition from an earthly government to a spiritual religion. The author accepts the challenge of persuading the audience to think beyond an independent, democratic mind-set to a kingdom mind-set. Clearly, this challenge is not new. Changing our thinking is what the apostle Paul wrote that we are instructed to do: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Romans 12:2). This renewing of the mind is the process that proves that we are truly born again—for we are no longer conformed to the patterns of this world. It is important to remember that in the days and times that the books of the Bible were written, the prevailing form of government in the earth was kingdoms. You, the reader, will be challenged to think ahead to something old in this volume.

One thing that may become evident to you as you read this book is how people, whether intentionally or unintentionally, want the Bible to conform to their way of thinking. With this book, you will be challenged to do the exact opposite. You will be challenged to conform your thinking to what is written in the Bible. This is not, by any means, a simple task; yet it is quite necessary if you are to understand the depth of riches that are contained in the Bible.

Consider this book to be the beginning of a new journey, a journey that will keep you focused on one objective: seeking first the kingdom of God. When Christ Jesus spoke those words, He did not do so arbitrarily. He spoke them with purpose. Our challenge is to submit ourselves to that instruction as a daily way of life. It is the author’s prayer that you will not only perceive this kingdom, but that you will endeavor to seek it daily as a way of life.

This book would not have been possible without the help of many saints. First, to my wife, Cindy, who pushed and prodded me to stay focused on the task at hand. I thank God for you. I have truly learned the meaning of He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord. To Sandy Evans, my beloved sister in the faith, thank you for reviewing this book and providing critical feedback. Also to Todd Martin, who provided tremendous assistance with the references; thank you so much for your help. Special thanks also to Keith Murphy and Becky Pratt, whose wisdom became an integral part of this book. May the Lord richly bless each and every one of you for your labor of love.

    CHAPTER 1

    WHAT IS A KINGDOM?

What is a kingdom? Before any discussion pertaining to kingdoms can begin, we must answer this question. Understanding God’s spiritual kingdom requires us to first understand the concept of a kingdom. A kingdom is a form of government. This form of government has one lawmaker, and that is the king. A kingdom form of government means that all authority rests with the king. A king and his kingdom are one and the same; they are inextricable. You cannot separate a king and his kingdom. When a man is no longer king, he no longer has a kingdom. Conversely, a man with no kingdom is not a king.

The concept of a kingdom is multifaceted; in other words, when the word kingdom is expressed, it may have a variety of meanings. First and foremost, a kingdom is a king’s right to reign or rule. It is the king’s authority. Whenever a king speaks, his commands must be obeyed. A king cannot be separated from his authority because authority is inherent in a kingdom. A kingdom is also the people that a king rules. The citizens that live in the territory that the king rules are his kingdom. The territory that a king rules is also defined as his kingdom. Another definition of the word kingdom is the era in which a king rules. For example, if a king ruled for ten years, that means his kingdom spanned ten years. Finally, the objects that belong to the king are also the kingdom. What objects does a king possess? A king wears a crown; he possesses a scepter, and he sits on a throne. Additionally, he wears a robe and usually lives in a castle or mansion. Each of the aforementioned items is a direct representation of a kingdom. These items, which represent the kingdom, are called emblems. These concepts and definitions are fairly easy to perceive in an earthly kingdom; however, what if the kingdom is not earthly? How do we understand concepts that we cannot perceive with our five senses? How do we begin to perceive of a spiritual kingdom? This chapter of the book is devoted to explaining this spiritual kingdom as we see it
