A Moment Too Long - Philly

    Chapter 1

T he street was crowded with people hurrying along oblivious to the sights, sounds or noise of the ongoing traffic. The air was heavy and humid and sweat and frustration showed on the many faces of people passing by.

Life used to be so simple many years ago thought Elisha. The pace of living was slower and easier. There again, it was harder to survive if one was poor.

Her thoughts then returned to where she was going and why which brought on a nervous reaction! She still couldn’t believe she was going through with it. A blind date! How pathetic, was she so desperate to even consider same?

Since losing her beloved husband Neil, the loneliness was quite unbearable. Her life had changed from nursing her husband twenty-four hours a day to suddenly nothing when he died. Relief was felt that he no longer suffered but the gap it left was unreal.

After Neil’s death, the arrangements and the funeral which she executed in a permanent daze, well, it was only after six months or more that Elisha realized she had to get herself together and try to think positive again, that life had to go on.

This blind date had come about through her son Ian who wanted her to ‘get a life’ again. He kept reading the match making columns in the newspapers, the dating strip until at last she agreed to contact Robert who had advertised.

Robert had answered her letter by telephone and sounded very nice. She didn’t divulge too much over the phone. He stated he was also widowed and wanted eventually to get married again, if of course he could find the right partner.

Remarrying was the last thought on Elisha’s mind but at least the man was willing to commit himself eventually whereas many men would not state so.

They had arranged to meet at ‘Patsy’s Pad’—a teashop in the High Street at 3pm. The shop was renowned for wonderful afternoon teas including delicious home—made cakes.

Robert was 55 years old, early retired. Elisha was 40 and unemployed. He had described himself with fair hair, blue eyes, 6'2" tall and that he would be wearing a grey silk suit with a pink shirt accompanied with a dark grey tie. It all sounded very flattering but caution was the word in Elisha’s mind. What if she didn’t like what she saw? If after ten minutes or so and she knew he was not her type, she decided she would just say, ‘sorry but I don’t think we suit each other’ and then walk briskly away. Having sorted that out in her mind, she felt less nervous.

In ten minutes time she arrived at the venue, bought herself a bottle of water and waited in apprehension. Within a few minutes a gentleman fitting Robert’s description approached her. He was quite attractive she thought with smiling eyes. He spoke well, very polite, certainly very smart and had shiny black shoes. She always looked at men’s shoes which told her whether they took a pride in their appearance.

Despite her nervousness, she slowly began to relax and was beginning to enjoy the brief encounter. Robert was a very interesting talker, seemed sincere and when their meeting was over, he asked if he could see her again.

    Chapter 2

T he next rendezvous with Robert occurred the following week. This time they met in Central Park. It was a lovely day and as previously discussed, Elisha had prepared a picnic lunch.

Walking through the park, she spotted him sitting on a bench. As soon as he saw her he stood up, waved, smiling happily.

Elisha was beginning to warm to this man, it was good to feel alive again, back in the normal world of living after all the sadness and misery of the past year.

The lunch was enjoyable and they decided to go for a walk. Robert carried the picnic hamper and they both chatted continuously delighting in each other’s company. Their weekly meetings continued for a few months and then Robert suggested that they went out for dinner one evening. Elisha readily agreed. When the time came, she chose to wear her best dress, had her hair done at the hairdressers—her hair being her pride and joy. It was thick black and shiny which matched her large brown eyes. A slightly snub
