    1. In the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ I will begin this day.

    ATTITUDE.

365 Prayers a Year! God is within me, from the moment I first waken up. Every day I will devote myself to God. I will memorize every single prayer, so that at all times I can meditate on God’s constant, unfailing presence. I will be aware that ATTITUDE means everything. I will maintain a positive attitude, come what may. Attitudes are habits of preparedness to meet new experiences, so I will make my attitudes my allies. I will develop an attitude of gratitude for God’s unfailing love.

    2. O Sacred Heart of Jesus I place all my trust in Thee.

    APTITUDE.

Today I will focus on my aptitude as well. Everyone has special aptitudes, so that is good to know. By practising self-analysis, I can develop my aptitudes, and acquire new ones. Someone said that most people pass through life without using or even knowing the unique aptitudes they possess. It’s your aptitudes that define you and set you apart from others, so work hard to cultivate them.

    3. Jesus Mercy, Mary help.

    ALIVE.

This beautiful little prayer was given to my class by a noble teacher when I was about eight years old. I have never forgotten it.

Alive is the key-word for today. Thank God I’m alive. This should be your first thought as you wake up every day, and indeed throughout the day. Everything else is a bonus. So today I will make the most of being vitally alive. I will not waste a second without appreciating the gift of life, a supernatural gift from God. How sad it is when so many jeopardise and endanger their lives, or the lives of others. I will always be pro-active and pro-life.

    4. Blessed be God for ever.

    ADAPTABLE.

This quality is a noble one, and therefore I will strive to adjust myself to whatever circumstances I find myself in. Throughout life, I may be called on to take up a new role, meet new people, go to a new country, move, or undertake new duties. For many, this can be demanding, but being open to change, to other cultures and customs, will help me to develop and grow as a person, become more accepting of other people, and achieve more. When one door closes, another one opens. If I lose my job, or a loved-one, it is not the end of the world.

    5. Our Lady of Fatima, Pray for us.

    APPLICATION.

If you are a believer, you will know that Our Blessed Lady appeared at Fatima in May 1917, an iconic but sometimes forgotten event in World History.

Each day as I learn a new prayer, I will also develop a special value, attitude or quality, to help me sail safely through the storms of life.

Today’s positive virtue is Application. This means I must try to apply myself more diligently with focussed attention to the task in hand, shunning distractions.

    The rewards will be great.

The achievers of History, such as Gandhi, Edison, Faraday, Einstein, Gates, all possessed this trait in abundance. I can learn from them. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. I will ‘tough it out’.

    6. O Jesus, in the Temple, You were asked questions and answered them correctly. Soon I shall be asked questions, grant that I also answer correctly. Reward my efforts in studying hard by directing for me only questions I have well prepared. O Jesus Divine Teacher and Mary Seat of Wisdom, help me Amen.

    ACTION.

The above prayer I have given to many young friends, preparing for exams. It has helped me and many others before an interview, a meeting, giving a talk, doing a test. By saying this prayer with relaxed deep breathing, your confidence will soar.

Action is all-important. ‘Faith without good works is futile.’ Actions speak louder than words. What actions am I taking towards my goals? Have I written down what I need to do today, what I need to buy, who I need to call, where I need to go? Procrastination is the thief of time. Don’t put off till tomorrow what you should have done last year!

    7. Our Lady of Good Success, intercede for us.

    ALERT.

I will be on the alert, watchful, vigilant. Many dangers lurk everywhere, crossing the road, going about everyday duties, moral as well as physical dangers. Without being paranoiac about this, I sometimes need to be on the alert for myself and others. Perhaps also I can be alert for opportunity when it comes knocking on the door.

    8. Our Lady, Our Queen and Our Mother, in the name of Jesus and for the love of Jesus, we implore Thee to take our cause in hand and grant a great success.

    AIMS.

Like the previous prayer, this one was said after the family rosary at night whenever there was a special need. Three Hail Marys accompanied it. Everyone had their own silent intercessions as they contemplated Our Holy Mother asking her Son on our behalf.

Everyone needs to have aims in life, no matter where or how old they are. Do I need to write down my aims, so that I can be more focussed on them? Are my aims laudable, and unselfish, so that they can be achieved without hurting anyone else? Every day I will consider my aims, and what progress I am making in achieving them.

    9. Our Lady of Victories, Pray for us.

    A HIVE OF ACTIVITY.

Is your life a ‘hive of activity’? To ward off worry, do you keep busy? There are so many hobbies and worthwhile pursuits that there is no excuse for inertia. The devil finds work for idle hands. I have just spent a decade in an Asian country where the work ethic is evident from the age of 4 to 84. Compare this with other places where ‘whiling away the time’ has become a way of life. Of course, mitigating circumstances occur where lifelong unemployment is endemic, but how sad and soul-destroying it is when men go through life having never experienced the ‘culture of work’ nor even had the urge to look for it. That particular Asian country had no crime problem, no cult of aggression, often found in Western countries. Work is a sacred duty, and what a lesson we can learn from the bees!

    10. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, help me.

    AESTHETIC.

Appreciation of the beauty of the Universe, in its myriad forms, a sense of the aesthetic, the gift of ‘wonder and awe in God’s presence’. How blessed are we to be born into a planet of unbridled beauty, and how onerous is our responsibility
