      It has been said that ‘truth is stranger than fiction’ and from researching this book, I have concluded that it is also more ludicrous, grotesque and truly fascinating.

      Not only does this book explore the gamut of human experience ranging from bodily excretions, bizarre beliefs and practices and various sexual persuasions, it also examines some of the curious attributes and behaviours of the beasts and creatures that inhabit our natural world.

      If nature abhors a vacuum, then surely it adores diversity.

      Trivia by definition is merely trivial; a lighthearted amusing pastime that offers us escape from the rigors and demands of our daily existence.

      Very often it is extremely difficult to distinguish that which is actually true from that which is merely ‘urban myth’.

      Be assured that every effort has been made to verify that the trivia contained in this book is both authentic and accurate.

      If the reader is of the opinion that any of these entries are dubious and unsubstantiated then they will need to conduct their own investigations to dispute claims of validity and credibility.

      Some readers will find that some of the trivia is both offensive and disgusting. Unfortunately, this is the nature of the sick world in which we live and I make no apologies.

      Scatological Humour or Toilet Humour is a vulgar form of humour that encapsulates the subjects of defecation, urination, flatulence, vomiting and various other bodily secretions. This type of humour dates back to Ancient Greece with references to ‘turd slinging’ appearing in the plays of the master of Old Comedy, the playwright Aristophanes (450 BC-386 BC).

      The Indus Valley civilization, which was founded around 2600 BC, had water-flushing toilets in each house that were linked by drains covered with burnt clay bricks.

      The World Toilet Organization (WTO) is a global non-profit organization committed to improving toilet and sanitation conditions worldwide. WTO is also the organizer of the World Toilet Summit and World Toilet Expo and Forum.

      The pig toilet from the Indian state of Goa is a toilet which consists of an outhouse linked to a pig enclosure by a chute.

      The Japanese company Matsushita has created a ‘smart’ toilet. It checks weight and body fat when you sit down. After you’re finished, an optical laser beam measures the level of glucose
