Celia's Collection of Stories

About this ebook
This book is based on a collection of short stories based on childhood memories. From a young age, I was interested in creative writing. At school, my favourite subject was essay writing, but circumstances at that time did not allow me to fulfil my ambition. When I retired from working, I again wanted to fulfil this lifelong ambition and picked up my pen to start writing to follow this dream. I hope this collection of short stories will be seen as both humorous and amusing.

Angela’s Dream
A ngela was a bright and intelligent girl who left school at sixteen years of age without qualifications; she was not academic. Her first job was working in a clothing factory. Angela was a friendly girl, well liked by her bosses and colleagues. Most of her friends worked there also. She was a stunning girl with a model’s figure. At five feet eleven inches tall, with long auburn hair, brown eyes, and a dark complexion, she made heads turn when out and about. She had a personality to match, carefree and fun-loving. Everyone wanted to be seen with her.
After working in the factory for two years, Angela became disillusioned. She didn’t want to spend her life behind a sewing machine. She had ambition and drive and knew she would have to leave her job and friends to follow her dream even though she didn’t quite know what she wanted. Because she’d left school without completing her education, her chances were limited.
Secretly, Angela wanted to do modelling, she certainly had the looks and figure to succeed. She had some money saved from working, and she knew she was financially secure for a few months.
She had a portfolio professionally done and set about looking for modelling agencies. When Angela announced her intentions to her friends, this was met with the usual commonplace begrudging you find in all small towns: some instantly ruling out her chances of success, while most wanting to have her courage. Angela was full of determination and was somewhat brave, and while some of her friends resented her, they also admired her gutsy decision to turn her back on a secure job.
Many letters were written, and after numerous rejections, Angela was beginning to feel despair.
With money starting to dwindle, she wondered if she had made the right decision. Day after day and letter after letter, her future began to look bleak. She was a fighter—that’s what had got her here, and she wasn’t one to give up, especially to prove to the people who thought she couldn’t make it, she was determined to carry on.
One day, while wandering around the town, Angela was approached by a scout from the nearby modelling school, who was looking for new faces. With great excitement, Angela rushed home to share the great news to her parents. Although they were a bit worried about her choice of career, they also gave their full support. Next day, Angela brought her portfolio to the school and did some photo shoots; although she loved posing for the camera, this was very different. She met other girls with the same ambition as herself. The agency told them they had picked a tough competitive business that required a lot of hard work, patience, and the ability to take rejection. They also told them modelling was not the glamorous profession that was portrayed on television.
A few weeks after Angela started her dream job, she quickly realised how demanding it really was—posing and pouting, being photographed from different angles. Some girls were humiliated for not walking properly as they were not used to walking in such high heels. Angela soon picked up the walk, and swagger, and it wasn’t long before she was confidently strutting down the catwalk. The girls she worked with didn’t have the same confidence as she had, and it wasn’t long before she found out how catty and cut-throat the modelling business really was. The people she thought were her friends were very different now. Angela was finding it a real challenge working with so many different personalities; the reality was far removed from the fantasy.
Every day was more demanding. Angela’s face was soon on the cover of glossy magazines and television. Because she was brought up in a small town, she had a close relationship with her parents and work colleagues. Angela’s mum was hardly surprised that her daughter was fulfilling her dream. She remembered, as a small girl, Angela dressing up in her dresses and heels and tripping around the house, posing and admiring herself in the mirror.
Angela’s dad was worried when his daughter decided to go to modelling school; he advised her to get a proper education and stable employment but still supported her in her chosen career.
When she returned to her home town, after being away for a few months, she was surprised to see her former colleagues waiting to congratulate her. Angela returned to the factory and was overwhelmed by the welcome she received. She was shocked to find posters of her plastered on the walls of the factory where her dream was born.
Angela’s friends arranged a ball to welcome her home. All her family and friends were there; she was wooed by the many young men, but Angela took it in her stride. She was level headed and down-to-earth and didn’t know what all the fuss was about. As she reminisced about old times, her friends marvelled at her bravery for following her dream.
When the ball was over, Angela hugged her friends and thanked them for everything. She
