About this ebook

The Vows draws upon traditional Christian teachings on the holiness of the marriage promises between a man and a woman. It explains how they may pledge to one another their commitments to a permanent, trusting, and family-oriented relationship. Mary Robinson illustrates the challenges and joys of such vows with impressions drawn from her own life, insights gleaned from contemporary church leaders and authors, and inspiration drawn from the Scriptures.

The beginning chapters of The Vows address the spiritual realities embedded in the phrases of the traditional marriage vow, showing how they capture the ups and downs of married life and sketch out a faithful response to those times. Later chapters turn their attention to the challenges that traditional marriage faces in modern society. Throughout, the author offers encouragement and exhortation that focus on helping the married couple remain committed to one another in the bond they had made before God.

You may find the life-altering nature of marriage vows presents you with challenges and leads you to ask questions about Christian teachings. If so, then Robinsons book will guide you on a journey through the meaning of the vows, give you a treasury of support from Christian leaders, and present you with a compendium of the Scriptures encouragement. When you finish reading this book you will have gained a clear understanding of the Christian ideals and aspirations for married life.

    Preface

In The Vows, I share the importance of honoring the marriage vows that God created for humans so that we can have successful marriages. Couples today must realize the sincerity behind these vows and how vital the commitment is. The vows are our guide to righteous living within our marriages. We must commit to obey them as interpretations of standards from God’s word.

We must stop being deceived by the ways of this world and allowing Satan to trick us into sin by accepting common-law marriage, divorce, and separation as the norm. These are not valid choices in a covenant committed to God, for he created marriage to be perfect and good.

God wants us to have happy, healthy, and successful marriages, but we must do them according to his will by honoring and obeying the vows he designed. We must recognize that a greater power gives us the knowledge and power to live on this earth as human beings, not to mention our very existence. If we can acknowledge that, we will have the confidence to honor that power by living accordingly through obedience.

Marriage, as an institution, was created to bring unity within the realm of humanity. And without the unity of humankind, we will just be a nation without a purpose.

God promised Abraham that he would be a father of many nations and generations to come because of his faithfulness to God. If we apply the same faithfulness of Abraham in our marriages, we could change the perspective of this world and destroy the things that the devil uses to condemn us.

    Introduction

As a nation, we must stop viewing marriages as a meaningless act or one bound for failure. A marriage is the one precious gift besides life itself that God created to bring us happiness. There is no failure in anything that God has a hand in, and he is truly for the success and happiness of humankind. When he created man and woman, it was to bring them together in holy matrimony as one. Therefore, we must not let deception from Satan destroy one of the things that God created to be perfect and good.

Marriage is one of the ways we can express our love for someone as well as our wants and desires. It gives us an opportunity to have happy and healthy relationships based on the word of God. A marriage relationship opens our hearts to the pleasures of life and all it has to offer when we can share it with someone we love.

God specifies that we should have agape love for each other. This is the same type of love he has for us, which never gives up, never loses faith, and endures through every circumstance. With love like this, how can we fail? The love God speaks of also doesn’t allow any failure; it doesn’t produce unhappiness or destruction.

Marriage is a beautiful thing when you can share it with someone you really love. In fact, it’s one of the most rewarding things that God has given humankind to allow them to express themselves to each other in love.

We must respect and honor the vows that God has set before us to have the success we seek in our marriages. The devil has deceived us into doing things his way, providing ungodly ways to destroy ourselves by changing what God has ordained since the beginning of time.

Humankind cannot continue on this road of destruction. We must stop the devil in his tracks to destroy his plans to steal, kill, and destroy our nation.

My inspiration for writing this book comes from my experience of being married twice and from observing the marriage habits of others. I would like to give my Lord and Savior the honor and praise
