About this ebook

The book GREEDY BUSINESS is a satire directed at human behaviour, particularly in regards to human priorities to choose between acts of humanitarianism and greed. The author notes that politics indeed is part and parcel of life but no where is it so vividly portrayed than in education and at the work place to satisfy human obsession with greed. Then he admitted, I cannot deny my role in that but that cannot justify it.

As individuals we allow Greed to Triumph Morality without humanitarian consideration for others in our efforts to improve quality of our life and that is inexcusable.

This book is therefore about that aspect of human thinking that can justify individuals doing things to others that they would not like others to do them.

I wonder how many of us find the necessity to take a step backward to explore the choices we have made to do the things we have done to others that we would not like to be done to us because if done to us they would likely destroy our quality of life. Yet some how, some of us can justify some of the things we do to others as the result of the choices we have made without humanitarian consideration for them in the name of improving quality of our lives at the expense of our victims.

Well! I did take a step backward and my observations suggest that humans obsession with Greed confirms why we do the things to others that we would not like to be done to us. Our tendency to want more and more at the expense of others without humanitarian consideration for the quality of life of others has blinded our moral responsibility to be fair. The purpose of writing this book is therefore to share my observations and thoughts with others in the hope that they too may find the need to take a step backward and explore the choices made in the past to do certain things to others that they would not like others to do to them.

Author

Leonard Amattey

The Author born and raised in Ghana, West Africa is now a Canadian citizen living in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.. He has been privileged to visit countries in the four continents of the world partly because of his brother’s career as Ghana’s ambassador to various countries. Even though his education and work experiences focused on the areas of Commercial Law, Economics, Accounting and Statistics, the author’s fascination with life which resulted in writing of this book does not address those areas. Instead, he credits his fascination with life to the psychological insight of the total human behaviour. Without the social network that he has developed through amateur sports and traveling, writing of this book and the others that he has authored would have been impossible, he noted. I am therefore contented with life re-echoing my experiences in traveling and with my sports connections without the other aspects of my life to avoid talking about the politics of life that is driven by human obsession with greed, he explained.

    CHAPTER ONE

    LIFE LESSON 101

    LIFE:

In our effort to improve quality of life, it is important to understand that, LIFE IS NOT ABOUT US.

Life is about the choices we make to live life.

In that sense, we can argue that life is a dependent variable and the choices we make are the independent variables in an equation.

Life is therefore deterministic and the choices we make to live life are stochastic.

The obvious conclusion that one comes to given the above explanation is that, we must think twice before making the choices we make to live life.

Because at the end of the day, life does not determine the quality of our life, the choices we make determine the quality of our life.

    The following popular sayings that:

    • There is no free Lunch is true

    • Nothing is free is true

    • You cannot have your cake and eat it too is true

    • To err is human is true

    • Common Sense is not common is true

    • What goes up must come down is true

    • What goes around comes around is true

    • The devil you know may be better than the Angel you don’t know is true

    • Those who live in a Glass House must not throw stones is true

    • A Bird in hand is worth two in the Bush is true.

The following observations are also true:

    • Delayed Justice by nature cannot be misconstrued as victory for Criminal Acts.

    • A crime is never gone unpunished. Justice will come when it will come and on its own agenda.

    • Helping others is a free savings account for the opportunity to solving your problems in not too distant future.

    • Happiness is a state of mind. The permanence of it can never dwell in you if you expect solely external phenomena as the sources of its supply.

    • It takes more than one to enjoy the feelings of love. But the development of love is a task for the individual.

    • The irony of life is that while we are complaining of loneliness, we are making others lonely.

    • Our strength cannot be found in blaming others. Our strength lies in our ability to find the blame (fault) in ourselves that others can use against us.

    • If we cannot recognize that sharing life is sharing problems then we are not ready to be married and for that matter not even ready to develop lesser relationships.

    • Let’s not deceive ourselves that, the attractions that others find in us are not conditional to the needs that the attractions can satisfy for them.

    • When one tells us that he or she is in love with us it may be premature to be happy until we are aware of the price of that love.

    • I learn very early that what has ever been known to have happened to any human being can possibly happen to me.

    • Nobody ever loves without a reason and the reasons are almost always selfish.

    • I am content with life because I know that I am the main source of my happiness. What ever help comes from others is just a bonus.

The above Popular Sayings and Observations can make a difference in making the right choices to improve quality of your life.

So, let us WATCH them carefully to shape the choices we make by the lessons we learn from the five letter word WATCH!

    WATCH:

    W stands for Words

    A stands for Attitude

    T stands for Tongue

    C stands for Character

    H stands for Heart

WORDS: Choose your words carefully when you have the opportunity to speak.

Your words can improve quality of your life but can also destroy quality of your life.

So, choose your words carefully and never say anything beyond, No Comments when you are under the influence of anger.

Anger plus anything is the ultimate recipe for destruction.

ATTITUDE: Control your attitude when you interact with others.

Like spoken words, Attitude can improve quality of your life but can also destroy it.

Your Attitude is more likely to be misunderstood compared to your words.

So, choose your words carefully to convey your message and never put up an Attitude that can be misinterpreted.

TONGUE: Let your Tongue be driven by your brain and not by your emotion and choose your words carefully to convey your message.

Our Tongue is the last control mechanism that can save us from speaking the words that can destroy quality of our life.

Therefore, your Tongue must not be given access to vocabularies that are likely to destroy quality of your life, Swear words, Abusive language and Cursing.

CHARACTER: Our character is the composition of our actions and the words we speak.

Our character pretty well defines the characteristics by which we are judged by others.

Choose carefully the company you keep, it is the reflection of your character.

Your actions toward others reflect your character.

Be the first to compromise in any conflict state with others.

Walk away from trouble and be forgiving.

Avoid road rage, it can kill you.

HEART: Our Heart is the engine that drives our body with all the delicate organs.

It absorbs all the shocks that our body is exposed to by us and others.

Let’s treat our Heart with care by treating others with the quality of the care that we can expect others to treat us. It is the ultimate recipe for minimizing the risks of becoming victims of the shocks that our Hearts may be exposed to.

Eat right and engage in regular physical activities and your Heart will be grateful and reward you with quality of life and long enjoyable life.

You can only do your best and you cannot do more than that.

Shakespeare once wrote, I dare do all that may become of a man. He who dares do more is none.

Your current lifestyle and quality of life are the results of the choices you have made up to this point of your life.

If you are not satisfied and want a change to improve quality of your life, try the choices being recommended by the five letters of WATCH.

This is also an opportunity for you to review the 10 Popular Sayings and the 13 Observations. Share your experience in regards to how any of them might have impacted your life in your interactions with others.

Your effort in sharing your experience with others and others sharing theirs with you can be a positive reinforcement in minimizing the risk of becoming a victim of life challenges.

OUR INNER-STRENGTH: THE POWER OF SUCCESS

WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ:

This book is about what you have done with your life prior to reading this book and what you will be doing for the rest of your life.

What you have done cannot be undone!

But you can change the rewards and consequences impacted on the quality of your life which are the result of your deeds up to this point by things you will be doing for the rest of your life. Good choices result in Rewards and Bad choices result in consequences!

Everything that you have done was driven by the choices you had made and everything you are going to do will, in turn, be driven by the choices you make.

Therefore you are ultimately responsible and accountable for your past deeds as well as the things you will do.

In the end you control your destiny, good or bad.

And History is always there to record your deeds, good or bad.

The Bad News: What is done cannot be undone.

The Good News: You have the opportunity to influence the things you do today, tomorrow and for the rest of your life in order to improve the quality of your life and ultimately your destiny.

And in the end, it is only History that will be the judge.

Our rewards and consequences are the evidence and the witnesses to deeds that History is going to judge us by. The way we treat others is the key measure of the quality of our destiny. So let’s think twice about how we treat others in the efforts we make to improve quality of our life.

    Responsibility and Accountability:

In our daily interactions with others, have you ever wondered about the diversity in our characteristics, especially the transformation from infant characteristics into adult characteristics?

It is soothing to notice the characteristics in our innocence as babies and the loving and adoration that we enjoy from just about everybody even from criminals. It is even more soothing to see as these infant characteristics transform into adult characteristics and the babies turn out to be heroes and successful innovative adults in their fields of profession.

We also face disappointments when infant characteristics transform into adult characteristics of brutalities and unimaginable criminal acts that terrorize the society that once loved and adored the infant characteristics.

What happens during the critical journey from the infant characteristics into the wild crazy adult characteristics you may ask?

It is quite a journey and a fascinating one, if you dare to observe.

And indeed what a dramatic story to be told, the Successes and the Failures as we embark on the transformation journey through the rugged paths of the jungles of LIFE!

Day in day out we witness and watch our transformation from our childhood characteristics into the jungles of the adult characteristics.

But do we really know what happened during the transformation and if so what role did we play as individuals and by the way what was your personal role?

Take a minute and look back at your performance, your role in getting you to where you are now and your role that may have intentionally or unintentionally influenced the quality of life for others.

Have you made the grade you deserve based on the efforts made?

You have done what you have done and this can never be undone.

But after reading this book, you have the opportunity to start your life all over again regardless of what you have done in the past, which can never be undone.

What you are going to do from now onward can also never be undone once it’s done.

But you can now set the record to earn the grade you deserve to get based on your efforts and the choices you will be making.

So, think twice and choose wisely because what is done can never be undone!

And you can only set the record for the grade you deserve to get and no one else.

Shakespeare once noted, WHAT IS DONE CANNOT BE UNDONE and Mark Anthony said of his friend Julius Caesar, THE EVIL THAT MEN DO LEAVES AFTER THEM AND THE GOOD IS OFT INTERED WITH THEIR BONES

Perhaps you may find no necessity to be accountable. And perhaps you are not alone.

Whether we claim some role or no role at all in the transformation, the cold hard fact is that the impact of the transformation is what dictates our quality of life in the past, today and will continue to do so for the tomorrows.

The reality is that our conducts and behaviors at least partially define the transformation into the adult characteristics from the childhood characteristics and we must be accountable.

All we need to come to the above conclusion is common sense without any scientific enquiry, although common sense is not common.

We must however find the necessity to be accountable.

But, I am not sure whether that is going to happen if the perception that common sense is indeed not common proves to be the case. Human behavior and conducts are the composition of genetic and environmental factors and the roles of individuals are part of the environmental factors that impact on the genes to measure the outcomes of the individual efforts we make to improve quality of our life.

The individual effort that we must make to improve quality of our life is the most powerful force that helps us achieve success and sustain the success from our efforts.

In exhausting our potentials to be successful we cannot do so at the expense of others without humanitarian consideration for them.

Doing so is being greedy and failing to recognize our individual and collective responsibility to respect and care for each other as members of a civilized society that we claim to possess.

Being greedy is not only about wanting more and more at the expense of our victims without humanitarian consideration for them. Being greedy is also about wanting more and more at the expense of our health without humanitarian consideration for those who may be inadvertently impacted by our bad habits such as our wife, husband, children, parents, friends and society as a whole.

As we continue to be greedy without humanitarian considerations for others, unknowingly, we soon underscore the necessity of being greedy at the expense of our own health and that of our loved ones. Therefore, at the end of the day being greedy at the expense of our victims will eventually translate into self-destruct habits and we will become victims of our own bad habits.

How does being greedy eventually translate into a self-destruct habit?

Self-destruct habits such as smoking, drinking excessively, acts of brutality and other criminal acts are driven by greed in response to the body’s need to satisfy the bad habits we have introduced our body to.

As we continue to practice our greedy acts in our interactions with others without humanitarian consideration for them, our greedy acts soon become a habit and many of the choices we make are influenced by the greed driven habits.

Since greed is driven by emotion, our priorities in making many of the decisions we make are going to be most likely dictated by our emotions rather than the brain.

That is why even though most of us know that some of the decisions we are about to make are going to be self-destructive at the long run, we nevertheless justify them.

We justify them because making a choice at the expense of others without humanitarian consideration for them has become a habit and eventually translate into making choices at our own expense without humanitarian consideration for our own health: Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Our emotions know no boundary so in the long run practicing greedy acts at the expense of others without humanitarian consideration for them will eventually translate into self-destruct habit destroying ourselves.

It is worth knowing that our being as humans is structured into a vehicle with epic-genetic factors. But at the end of the day, in order to improve quality of our life we must understand that we are the driver of the vehicle and the genes and the environmental factors are the passengers.

Let’s therefore invoke our God given Inner-strength now to reverse our greed driven bad habits before it is too late and before we become self-destructive.

Human Greed leaves much more destruction in its path compared to Illegal Drugs, Smoking, Alcohol and Natural disasters put together.

As if our individual and Natural disaster challenges are not enough, over time all these habits have one more challenge they must face in life…society’s obsession with Greed.

What ever your particular habit may be today is one more opportunity for you to take the bold step now to reverse the trend.

Let your Inner-strength overcome your Emotions.

The consequences of our mistakes can be reversed.

Taking the step is a reminder that after all you have the right stuff, the Inner- strength to do what ever you want even in the face of temptations, no matter how strong the temptations may be.

And you will look back on that day and say ‘I did it’ and most importantly you will have discovered your Inner-strength that empowers you to overcome future life challenges.

    Now, stop!

Take a deep breath and make your wish to embark upon the bold step to reverse your most challenging habit……..whether it is Drinking, Smoking, Committing Crimes and or Being Greedy without humanitarian considerations for others. ………You can reverse them.

Perhaps more than anything else, by taking this bold step now, you have at long last discovered the power of the Inner-strength you have taken for granted. It is even more soothing when you also realize that it is YOU, not anybody else, not any re-habitation program and not any medical intervention measures other than YOU who have discovered the God given Inner-strength that has empowered you to take the bold step to execute a solution to the particular challenge that you have faced for such a long time.

You can now face with pride and confidence future challenges that may pose a threat to your health, financial and social well-being, knowing that you have just solved a similar problem, or you have reversed a trend that has tormented you for such a long time.

Believe me your God given Inner-strength is the mother of all the sources of power that can help you to face any challenge in life.

Your Inner-strength is not only the most efficient source of power to address your health, financial and social challenges, but also it is the cheapest of all the costs associated with facing life challenges.

As an individual you have three sources of power to help address your life challenges.

    God given Inner-strength

Society including your family and friends

    Professionals including medical intervention measures.

The most effective and yet the least expensive of the three sources of power is the Inner-strength. The Inner-strength is the key to your body’s immune system and it determines when the other two sources of power, Society and Professionals are to be invited to come on board to help address the particular challenge you may be facing. Without first using the Inner-strength to address the challenge prior to intervention by Society and Professionals will likely render the solution less efficient and much more costly.

It is only the individual facing the particular challenge who can experience the feelings of the particular challenge, and in fact in many situations it is only the individual who can invoke the intervention measure appropriate to solving the problem at issue.

There is a saying that suggests that: Others cannot take medications for us to address our health problems. It is the person impacted by the problem who must take the medication if he or she wishes to get better.

The first step towards solving any problem is Knowledge, knowing the nature of the problem one faces. And the best person to describe the nature of the impact of a problem affecting the human body is the body impacted by the problem. It therefore makes sense to suggest that the person with the best knowledge of the particular challenge must take the initial step to explore the potential solution possibilities.

Therefore the Inner-strength of the individual affected by the challenge at issue must take full responsibility to explore the potential solution possibilities.

Knowing the initial step we must take towards addressing a challenge is the easiest part, for we all know that we cannot expect others to take medications for us and expect us to get well. The difficult part is executing the intervention measure appropriate to addressing the particular challenge one is facing.

In many situations we may know the right thing to do to reverse the bad habitual trend. Yet we allow our greed driven emotions to overcome our moral responsibility to make the right choices. So in most situations in life, it may not be the question of not knowing what to do. It may be the question of not willing to do what it takes to make the right choices.

Only few people, if at all there are any, who may not know that regular exercise and good dietary habit are the best preventive intervention measures for maintaining good health and intellectual development. Yet many of us lack the discipline and the willpower to make changes to our lifestyle by developing healthy eating habit and engaging in regular physical activities although we are aware that the only solution to our problem is invoking our Inner-strength to make those lifestyle changes.

The alternative of not taking the bold step to reverse a negative trend is that others who may be in a power position will eventually reverse the trend for you resulting in at worst death and at best losing your freedom perhaps for ever.

Colonel Russell Williams of Canada, a distinguished decorated soldier led a double life, a respected Army Colonel, husband/ father, but he was also a cold blooded multiple rapist/murderer. He was aware he had a bad habit and could have made the effort to use his Inner-strength to reverse his murderous habit but failed to do so. He was finally caught and the authorities had to reverse his criminal habit by sentencing him to life in prison. He does no longer have potential victims as a prey to feed his murderous habit. Society took him out of reach for his victims. He brought shame to his wife, children, friends, profession and those who had the misfortune of knowing him.

Colonel Williams is doing time in jail now, but still living and did not die from the fact that he no longer has the opportunity to commit his crimes.

So what prevented him from invoking his Inner-strength to stop the greed driven criminal acts? Although the price he is paying for his crimes is a drop in a bucket compared to the price his victims and their families had to pay, Williams brought shame to his wife, children, friends and society as a whole.

Given the rate of crimes committed daily there is a clear evidence to suggest that it is the majority of us who may believe that, like Colonel Williams it is possible to get away with murder, a misconception leading many people to believe that they can get away with murder. Until his arrest and conviction in 2013, colonel Williams believed so too.

After all he believed he was very careful and meticulous at covering up his tracts at least for the crime he was charged and convicted. He packed his truck in a field far away from the scene of the crime making sure he would not be seen parking his truck close to the scene of the crime.

Despite all the cover up efforts he was charged and convicted having confessed during his encounter with police interrogation. He was forced to confess to the sexual attack, adoption and murder of his victim in order to spare his wife from the intensive interrogation, as he was told that his wife was being subjected to, a process of collecting circumstantial evidence.

Here is something sad, but interesting about this cold blooded criminal.

Colonel Williams made the choice to confess and was convicted for 1st degree murder and received life sentence.

My theory is that either he confessed because his wife was aware of his crimes and was worried that his wife was going to give him up anyway. Or he confessed in order to save his wife from the intensive interrogation she was being subjected to, instead of denying to possibly avoid life prison term. If this is the case, so after all Colonel Williams has feelings, humanitarian feelings for another human being, his wife and made the choice to go to jail for life so that his wife’s suffering through the intensive interrogation would stop.

If this is true, then this time, Colonel Williams invoked his Inner-strength to make the right choice confessing to the crime and spared his wife from the suffering she was going through.

But where was this humanitarian feeling that invoked Colonel Williams Inner-strength to make the right choice of confessing to the crime to save his wife from the intensive interrogation? Why did he not use the same Inner-strength to stop him from committing the crimes to save his victim’s lives?

Why did Colonel Williams not invoke his Inner-strength to make the right choice by suppressing his greed driven temptation of his criminal sexual habit to avoid committing his crimes?

So, now it is clear that Colonel Williams knows he has the Inner-strength to invoke to help him overcome the temptations of evil thoughts, but he simply chose not to use his Inner-strength in order to enjoy his greed driven emotional thirst for criminal acts, partly because he thought he could get away with murder and partly because he thought he was too smart to be caught. Sadly, that is the fatal mistake many of us make.

A lesson to be learned by humans: that we can never outsmart nature.

Delayed justice by nature should never be misconstrued
