Thunderhead: And Other Poems

About this ebook
Kenneth E. Grant
Ken Grant, a retired Presbyterian minister, lives with his wife, Beverly, in Pasadena, California. Born in Los Angeles and raised in nearby Glendale, he was a “movie moppet” (bit player and extra) during his teen years, then served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War Two. Returning afterward, he completed his education at the University of Southern California. Following seminary training, he spent nearly forty years pastoring churches in California and the Midwest, including parishes in Iowa, Arizona, Missouri, and Colorado. Ken’s interests are broad, and his sympathies wide as his poems written over many years suggest. Some reflect his experience overseas, others a brief time in the business world. Many others, however, were born of his years spent pastoring various churches and the fascinating people met along the way. Ken’s previously published books include Ponderings (1986), a collection of stories about country folk and their relationship with “The Almighty” as told by an old cowboy. The second book, Thunderhead (2014), takes its title from the first poem in the book and is followed by several subjects, then ends with a poem from the old cowboy. The present volume, From Where I Sit, embraces five sections of poetry: the product of a long life and richly varied experience of a sensitive soul who continues to write and stay very much alive in his senior years. The sketches that conclude this book are by the author, whose hobbies include sketching and painting scenes and faces.

FOREWORD
The poems in this book might rightly be called the songs of my heart,
reflecting many varied experiences life has offered, and wonderful people I have been privileged to know. Every poem also reflects the unique emotional impact each experience has made on this admittedly sentimental soul.
You will find three sections, each with its own emphasis of generally similar content. Section One reflects the profound impact that nature and the natural world have made on me. The first poem, Thunderhead,
titles the whole collection and was written while driving with my son across Colorado, Utah and Nevada and marveling at the magnificent panorama of the western skies. Initially jotted down on the back of my paper placemat at a roadside coffee shop where we’d stopped for lunch, it languished in my file for years before resurrected and wistfully remembered, it was placed with many others in this book.
Section Two in many ways is the most personal, reflecting among other things, the joys and sorrows of my single years in mid-life and career. It was also a time for forming beautiful friendships; many will surely last a lifetime. Some loves turn into that, after all.
Section Three is more general, filled with poems of many kinds, reflecting many moods and many shades of meaning. Some reflect the more mature years I have now entered. I am no longer young. Senior readers will, I suspect, identify readily with the perspectives found in many poems here. You who are young, however, may be given a glimpse of how your grandpa and grandma see their world and their life in it. Be assured that it is by no means a gloomy picture! Whatever its pain or pathos, this life and the world we live in are filled with incredible, magnificent beauty, great mystery and awesome wonder. Living fully means to be as open as possible to it all, to share with our fellow travelers along the way, to help them with their load (and allow them to help us)—striving to leave this world with some positive gift of our presence, however grand or small. This book is intended to be some part of that gift.
