About the Author
A Soul’s Romancing: Experience the Holy is an offering to Jesus-Messiah, the lover of my soul. He believed, and proved, that loving me merited His death.
These writings, born in the early morning hours when love’s intimacy is most pronounced, are dedicated to two women who, at very different times, came into my life and never left—to my wife, Dawn, who always sees something in me worth loving, and to my aunt, Frances Ardra, who, after forty years, was unexpectedly rewarded for her faithfulness.
Thank you.
In Gratitude: This chronicle of the soul in love would never have left the pages of my personal journal had it not been for the belief of family and friends who found the manuscript worthy of reading. Sincerely I thank them for loving and challenging me to put my prayer life into book form: To Donald and Jackie Mercier whose years of friendship continue to lighten the burden; to Margaret and Lester Darigan who gracefully walk the path to holiness; and to Art and Laura Blake who taught me the meaning of family.
Introduction
I don’t remember a time in my life when prayer didn’t hold an attraction for me. Obviously, as a child, I didn’t have the spiritual vocabulary to appropriately name or adequately describe a potential foundation in prayer. Yet, as a little boy, I often sensed something bigger than myself, something from beyond, alive in a quiet stillness that seemed to surround and inhabit me. It was as though a gentle, pervasive presence was just standing there before me in sheer, delighted amusement, with watching eyes of eager approval. Respecting my creative, inquisitive imaginings of daily interactions with my childhood heroes Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger, who traveled with me on a small family farm in Patten, Maine, this gentle presence was never intrusive, as though already engaged through the venue of His own desire. The quiet conveyance of endearing benevolence never allowed the usual childhood fear of the unknown access to my consciousness. This gentle, overshadowing presence was not the typical imaginary friend living only in the mind of a prepubescent child. I knew only of this presence as being with me and could see Him only through the accompanying sensation that seemed to carry His presence to my awareness. It was an extraordinary childhood revelation for a little boy who wondered of the greatness of God simply because of the huge lantern lights that hung from a small mission church ceiling on long, black iron chains. Yet, I assumed that everyone knew of this kindly spirit-presence who appeared to love the simple treasure of beholding innocence at play and of whom there was no need to speak.
As a young man in my early twenties, prayer continued to possess a heightened awareness and allurement to a mysterious presence-being that was both inviting and seductive by nature. I wanted to know more about it. I wanted to feel a comfortable and knowledgeable competency in it, based on personal experience. I needed to understand the source of my yearning, which was burgeoning with intensity and possibility within me. I conjectured that prayer must consist of something more than a mere repetition of holy words and a predetermined format established for explicit, conformed unity, rather than the Spirit’s fiery passion expressed through inner, inaudible groaning. I was taunted by the conventional cultural displays of religious piety that revealed less of the one who was actually listening, receiving, and responding and far more of the person engaged in prayer.
The most suitable teachers of authentic Christian contemplation are those who possess the undeniable gift and are willing to tutor the novice in the early stages of soul development. And so, I ventured to St. Anselm’s Benedictine Monastery in Washington, DC, and remained there for over a month. It was an honored blessing to live among these English monks, singled out for a risked life within a lifelong, liberating enclosure, specifically designed for pursuit of the holy. I had been granted permission to share in every aspect of a consecrated, communal life, whose proven discipline had endured through the centuries. In conjunction with life among these learned men of contemplation, I enjoyed the luxury of participation in a prayer course presented by
