About this ebook
Adis Roca
I was born in Guantánamo, Cuba and lived in a small home built on stilts overlooking the Guantánamo Bay. I came to the United States of America at the age of fi ve, where I spent most of my childhood years in the Florida Keys. That is where I developed my passion for the sea. At the age of eighteen, I was hired by Eastern Airlines and spent the next fi fteen years travelling to many places around the world. It is because of these experiences that I have so many stories to share with my students. I hope that as you read them, they will inspire you to fi nd science in your daily life too.

After many days of searching, we walked into a school where there was a parent arguing with the school’s secretary in the registrar’s office. Instead of standing there and listening, Nicole and I walked around the school, checking out the classrooms and the playground. We came across an indoor patio and sat down on a bench rest. There were pigeons roosting in the corners of the roof, making their cooing sound. As I looked up at the ceiling, memories of my childhood began to flash in and out my mind faster than I could sort them
