About this ebook

This compilation includes an extract from a group of poems written for a masters degree. Originally, there were 55,000 words. The scenario was a village and various characters in it interlinking with some modern issues such as organic farming, and each other.

I have interwoven other poems which link in to the subject. I hope you will enjoy meeting some of my village personalities!

    PERFORMANCE

    SUGGESTIONS AND RIGHTS

This second working of my work, which originally focused on poetry, has increased my idea that it is open to further creative artistic interpretation. It has the capability of being read aloud, acted or illustrated, even being filmed. There are gifted people in adaptation and all the art fields. If anyone has a bright idea as to how the piece might be presented, please contact me, as I would like to see it develop into a performance piece of some kind, even mixed media.

As a former English/Drama teacher, I can see the possibilities of extracting verses for performance. For example, ‘Gossip Spawn’ is a perfect poem for choral speaking/acting. ‘The Daydreams of Miss Prahn’ is a wonderful character study and how about an art lesson painting the village of Rainbow or the fish in Quicksilver, or designing a set for any of the other poems, not to mention Nature Study about the meadows and river. What kind of flowers might Miss Prahn have in her garden? I leave it to your imagination.

If you do embark on a project, or have any ideas, I would love to hear about them. Please contact me by email on maggie.ingham@yahoo.co.uk. in the first instance.

If anyone is inspired enough to publically perform the whole verse drama, in a fee—paying situation, I think it is reasonable to inform me and pay a modest fee for permission.

Otherwise, I hope you enjoy this work, which is a sample of people and events which could go on, and on … .

    See you.

‘To my beloved daughters, Caroline and Stephanie.’

I acknowledge Huddersfield University for the use

    of part of my dissertation.

    Precipitation tightly clings

    to the weather vane… .

    millions of light droplets

    decorate the peeling paint

    of the over-wrought cockerel

and hang precariously from the edge

of old flint tiles and gutters.

    The indecisive cock,

    spun by capricious wind,

    fires water drop projectiles

    like bullets, at roosting pigeons,

    who, startled,

    crescendo into the air

    complaining noisily… .

    In vane,

    the drizzle soaked bird,

    wrestles with the wind;

    forged astride a compass arrow,

    he rides changes of direction,

trying to remain with the warm wind… .

    The strong cold wind teases,

    then eases the iron plumes
