Introduction
Is it possible to be become a better leader in 30 days? Absolutely! Most of us have read one too many books on leadership. We have found them helpful and they have increased what I call our leadership awareness.
But the question is, How much of what we read did we actually implement into our everyday leadership style and practice?
It is the goal of this book to do just that! We have all heard that it takes about 30 days to change a habit. Well, my goal is to help you change your leadership perspective and hopefully some of your habits in 30 days. I don’t expect you to embrace all the concepts and practices that are outlined, but if just one really hits home, you will become a better leader.
You will notice that I use both the words leader and manager throughout this book. Many authors find a sharp distinction between the two; I don’t. I have a saying that I have used through the years which I’m certain isn’t original with me: All leaders manage, but not all managers lead.
For me the two words are closely aligned, but not exactly the same. They differ in emphasis and how you relate to the people following you.
This book is designed to be read one chapter a day. Yes, I really mean that! There are many of you who could read this book in two hours, but that is not the point. Each chapter has an action item for you to complete. Don’t worry, they’re not hard! If you do them, they will help you change your leadership perspective, and yes, possibly your habits.
This book is also designed to be read in the order in which it was written. There is a thematic method that moves through the book. I know that many of you will see a chapter that looks interesting and that’s what you’ll want to read. That’s okay! But, please keep in mind that many of the chapters build on one another.
I have been leading and managing people for over 30 years, and to the best of my ability, have employed everything you will read in this book. Being a leader is not for everyone, but we all find ourselves in leadership roles from time to time. When we do, we want to be the best leader
