About this ebook

This book is a call for a radical commitment to following Jesus in terms of His conditions. It laments the fact that too many professing Christians are contented with a very comfortable form of religion without dedicating themselves to the cause of the gospel. Disciples are those who make things count. They are never satisfied with the status quo. They desire to see revival and renewal, wishing to see lives transformed and numerical growth in the Church. There is a passionate desire to fulfil the call of God on their lives. They become an integral part of the vision and mission of their churches.

    PREFACE

The call to discipleship is a matter of intense urgency and not to be treated lightly. It is so crucial that the mandate to make disciples forms the ‘famous last words’ of Jesus before He ascended to heaven. The proclamation of the gospel and the advancement of the kingdom of God depend on the calibre of those who claim to follow Jesus.

Disciples are those who make things count. They are never satisfied with the status quo. They desire to see revival and renewal; they wish to see lives transformed and numerical growth. There is a passionate desire to fulfil the call of God on their lives. They become an integral part of the vision and mission of their churches.

Unfortunately, there are many who do not fulfil the criteria of discipleship. These are the common churchgoers who are on a sightseeing tour. They merely perform a religious duty on a Sunday morning, smugly going through the motions of church. These are spectators, not participators. They are committed to nothing in particular and remain devoid of vision and a sense of mission. They ‘know nothing of the zest of high adventure and the thrill of discipleship discovery’ (Cosgrove 1980:7). In many instances, the Church itself has fallen short of implementing this command of Jesus. Michael Cassidy laments that ‘sometimes an eagerness to get great numbers of converts degenerates into a most unfortunate truncating of the requirements of Christian discipleship’ (in Kretzschmar & Ntlha 2005:97). Yes, a diluted message draws huge crowds whose lifestyles are not challenged but who are well entertained. Jesus, however, called for something far beyond this—educating the converts with strong discipling programmes. Nothing less than a radical commitment to the kingdom will do. This is when one nails one’s colours to the mast. This is discipleship. This is what you, the reader, are ultimately called to.

    FOREWORD

Far too many Christians think that just accepting Jesus Christ and doing nothing else for their walk with the Saviour is sufficient enough for this life. This is a dangerous assumption because following Jesus requires much more than waiting for something to happen. Even more dangerous is the fact that Christians think that growth will occur because they are involved in some kind of activity in the church. Many Christians also substitute acts of charity as a means of pacifying the conscience; still others make the grave mistake by self-denial and doing good to others to obtain favour, instead of yielding to the call to follow Jesus the way He wants them to follow. Discipleship doesn’t just happen in the lives of Christians. It requires every child of God to personally answer the call of Jesus:

Then said Jesus to his disciples, ‘If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.’ (Matt. 16: 24)

Rev. John Ramasamy has been a personal friend of mine for more than three decades, and he is no newcomer to the subject of discipleship. He not only brings more than thirty years of experience to this exciting and important biblical teaching but he also has a rock solid walk of discipleship. His teaching is enhanced in that he is a biblical scholar of good reputation. His contribution to the theological education in our community is quite significant. In this teaching, he captures and articulates a candid and ‘no-nonsense’ approach to following Jesus. The reader will find it hard to escape his genuine appeal to the real message of discipleship. Every true disciple knows that this approach is the essence of following Jesus, and nothing less than what this book calls attention to will do.

I have read with interest and appreciation the proofs of this book. I consider this would make an excellent textbook, for it contains a wealth of suggestions and practical advice for those who want more from serving the Lord. This book will be a valuable tool for many who want
