About this ebook

Children get pleasure in picking and eating fruit and vegetables, especially when they grow their own. The first part of the book, based on actual, events describes how plants grow, through words, sketches and photographs. Seeds germinate on an allotment garden. The pumpkin shoots and leaves race each across the earth in order to get the most light from the sun for food energy and growth. The winners will be the pumpkin plants with the most pumpkins growing on them and/or the largest ones.

The book relates the true story about one pumpkin which was different looking from all the others. Jack olantern pumpkins were being grown for Halloween, but this one was a figure of eight shape instead. It was the biggest, but no one wanted it as it was the wrong shape and size for a lantern. It ended up being dumped into a compost bin full of horse poo and straw and plant bits and pieces that again no one wanted, but in the bin were creatures that did want a good meal and shelter provided by one big pumpkin.

Author

M.J. Anderson

M.J. ANDERSON moved from London to Middlesex when she was seven. A short walk took her into open fields and wild land, which surrounded a shooting range. With her sister and friends she roamed the fields and collected newts, bluebells and rusty old bullets to take home to her familys distress. After all, she did not know that newts could climb out of their container and wonder around the house, or bullets leave rust marks on clothes! Leaving school at 15 years of age, M.J. then returned several times until she graduated with a Biology degree. People do not change much with age and now she has dogs and grandchildren to help keep her muddy. Married for over 40 years, her husband is an enthusiastic fruit and vegetable grower. They have had allotments - land traditionally rented or leased from local government - for almost as long as they have been married. The author has loved reading throughout her life and would even read adverts in shop windows if there was nothing else available. M.J. is beginning to love writing books as much as reading them and is now writing a series of books, based on life on the allotments.
