About this ebook

If you're reading this book, then you need help with your workplace relationships. Your current thoughts and ideas about the work place may be causing you stress and frustration. That's the old you. The new you will find this book an absolute godsend if you have the courage to truly look at yourself and the situations around you. You will either love or hate this book. It is thought-provoking and confronting. I believe it's an "in your face" look at people and human nature at work. The reason I say love or hate it is because it depends on how honest you are and whether or not you can accept that if I push your buttons, I am offering you a chance to grow and learn about yourself. If you push your buttons, I am offering you a chance to grow and learn about yourself. I am offering you a chance to grow and learn about yourself. If you push my buttons, then you give me the opportunity to learn about myself. It's all about you. That concept will be explained in depth over the next few chapters.

    INTRODUCTION

If you’re reading this book, then you need help with your workplace relationships. Your current thoughts and ideas about the work place may be causing you stress and frustration. That’s the old you. The new you will find this book an absolute godsend if you have the courage to truly look at yourself and the situations around you. You will either love or hate this book. It is thought-provoking and confronting. I believe it’s an in your face look at people and human nature at work. The reason I say love or hate it is because it depends on how honest you are and whether or not you can accept that if I push your buttons, I am offering you a chance to grow and learn about yourself. If you push my buttons, then you give me the opportunity to learn about myself. It’s all about you. That concept will be explained in depth over the next few chapters.

A great example of people and pushing buttons happened as I was out for dinner with a few successful business people in my home town. We were involved in a discussion about business and the cost of human error, particularly within an OH&S context. I made a comment about human nature and responsibility. Stating that, in my opinion, people need to take responsibility at work. Two business men became quite upset and heated when I said the staff should be well trained. If well trained, then they have a duty of care to the employer and themselves. This statement sent them over the edge emotionally. Understanding human nature and my concept of it’s all about me, I stayed calm knowing that they had a personal story to tell. They obviously had situations close to home that caused them to take my statement personally. How interesting, I thought, and how easily they made it about me. Did I do anything to them? No, I just stated an opinion about a situation. Mind you, one of the greatest issues in human relations is the ability to accept that people have differing opinions. We all have opinions and differing realities. I don’t have the experience of a bitter work cover fine to cloud my judgement. I thought my comment was harmless enough, it was just an opinion. Another dining guest jumped in with her own opinion. Then the three chimed angrily that people in the workplace will never take responsibility, because business owners are liable for their workers’ stupidity. I remember thinking to myself that the workplace will never change if everyone has that attitude. These successful business people were focused on their own particular incidents with work place fines for safety issues, believing the system or the workers to be in the wrong. They couldn’t step back and discuss the issue calmly because they had made it personal (all about me or them). I believe there are always two sides to every story. You may get a fine for your workers lack of care in wearing a safety jacket or driving a forklift unsupervised, but at the end of the day someone in your organisation is responsible for that worker. Often the worker who does the wrong thing has a string of team leaders, supervisors and/ employer and themselves. This statement sent them over the edge emotionally. Often the worker who does the wrong thing has a string of team leaders, supervisors and/ I have spent more than twenty five years in the work force with more than half of that time as a manager. I have written this book from my personal experience which represents my opinion. This book will ask you the questions but only you know the answers. Only you know if you can, or want to do things differently. Only you know if you want to see things differently. It takes courage to truly look at yourself and see your part in a difficult situation at work. I know I am confronting even though I just ask the questions. What’s wrong with that? If you don’t like the answers, that’s entirely up to you because they are your answers. They are your answers or your excuses. Either way, it’s up to you. You can’t change other people, but you can change the way you respond to those around you, which in turn creates the opportunity for change in others. You owe it to yourself to find peace and satisfaction in your work life.

Please visit my website: www.notaboutyou.me and let me know what you think. I love feedback whether it is positive or not. I don’t take offence because I know people and fully understand the principle of it’s all about me. I love to challenge myself and my attitudes as well as those around me.

I wish you great success and happiness in your work life and your life as a whole. All your relationships will improve if you truly embrace the concept of it’s all about me.

NOTE: Life is too short to be unhappy at work when you spend one third of your life working.

    HUMAN NATURE

    - IT’S ALL ABOUT ME

It’s all about me! That’s human nature, there’s nothing sinister about it. It’s just the way it is. Our peace of mind and success as human beings rely heavily on our ability to form healthy relationships with people around us at work and at home. If you accept this simple statement as the basis for all your relationships, then you will have total peace of mind no matter what life throws your way. If it’s all about me, then it’s all about you, right? Absolutely!

We are all individuals. No two people are the same. No two siblings are the same even
