    CHAPTER 1

GRAMMAR SCHOOL BOYS FISHING FOR FUN AND $$$$$$$

I n grammar school we had three months off for vacation; most kids try to find odd jobs to do to make some summer time money. Whether it is cutting grass, painting houses or whatever they could find. We had a fishing camp in Port Sulpher, Louisiana, we used to fish every weekend. Me at the age of fourteen years old bringing Randy my younger brother at thirteen years of age bring my younger brother Keith at nine. I asked my dad can me Randy and Keith go and stay at the camp take da boat and sell our fish. You see back in those days there was no limit on size are how many you catch, he said that sounds like you have a plan. I said I do, we need your help I will call all the local seafood restaurants and seafood markets and make a list of our customers. We will come back in late that evening after dark ice our fish down and put them in the boat shed for you to come and pick them up the next day. I will call the list of customers and see who wants what, just leave us a few dollars in the ice chest when you come back in case we run out of sandwich meat, drinks and gas. We just need sandwich meat while we are fishing. We will live off the water we will trawl to catch us some shrimp and crabs, pick up oysters and of course we will have all the fish we need to eat we will eat better than at the house. He said it sounds like yall already have yall bags packed, I said you know us, well we got a deal? WE will even give you a piece of the pie no telling how big it will be we will supply you and mom with all the seafood yall can eat for three months.

Now you talk about three Cajun boys fired up, fishing and making money at the same time.

    fishonhook.JPG

I had our itinerary all laid out we would fish the Gulf of Mexico from daylight to dark, you see it’s only about a twenty minute boat ride from the camp. After racking up on Speckled Trout, catching them two at a time in most cases, not to mention some Red fish that we will catch up against the beach. Now at dark we will run back to the camp clean some fish, peal some shrimp and make a good Cajun salad. Then jump in the bayou with a bar of ivory soap (it is the only soap that floats) after getting cleaned up, we will take a short nap and head out to work again o I mean to fish. You see we have a choice of two good spots to fish at night. One hot spot for Speckled Trout and White Trout is what is called da flare that is what it is. It is burn off from a old existing oil site it burns around the clock. You see at night fish are attracted to light they will come for miles. Light attracts bait fish and of course that attracts the fish we want to catch and sell. The second hot spot is fishing off the pier under the lights we stand on the pier and throw our lines right under the lights. The only drawback is the raccoons think we are fishing for them; they will grab those fish as fast as you catch dem and I will tell you we don’t play around catching dem fish. We would average two forty eight quart ice chest a day $$$$$$$. I hope yall enjoy the rest of the book and know yall will that’s why I wrote it.

    GOD BLESS

    (LUKE 14:16)

    CHAPTER 2

    CAJUN BOYS FIRST DEER HUNT

W ell it’s like dis me and a good podna of mine Boyd use to fish together and do some hunting together. Yes dat is that is da same Boyd dat I wrote about in chapter 12. Now back to the story, his aunt has a small farm outside of Thibodaux Louisiana. Boyd and I use to take some weekend trips down there as youngens. We use to love to go down there and eat some real Cajun food. One Friday evening first getting down to the farm da weather being real nice. We walked around the cow pasture and Boyd asked me have you ever rode a cow? I said a cow like dat one, he said yes one like dat one. Well I don’t have to tell you what happened next. Can you imagine two young Cajun boys, still wet behind da ear going to try to ride a 800 pound animal, a cow. Boyd said you go first me being dum founded said ok. Boyd took some hay to get da cow close to us. I slipped a rope around that big animal and I do mean a big animals neck. I then grabbed da rope and jumped on, in a laying position. Dat der animal wasn’t going to have any of dat he took off running and let me on my but. After taking turns with new cows, we laughed and had fun doing it. Now it’s time to go and see if we can’t make a evening deer hunt.

We made a agreement not to shoot anything but deer. This means no squirrels, quails or anything else hard to do but we are going for the big enchilada. We only had one stand in the tree big enough for the both of us, besides it’s getting late and we will come out at dark. Now I wish we would have not made that deal I see squirrels everywhere but in our stand also we are looking at some quail on the ground. Well now we both here something moving and making some noise always off, hard to tell where its coming from. Well it now looks like the deal not to shoot anything but deer is getting sweeter and sweeter as that deer is coming our way and getting louder and louder. It actually sounds like more than one deer because they are separate. Now the tension grows we are excited, nervous and anxious. Now time is moving slow and so are the deer, I looked at my watch we have been patiently waiting since we heard them moving around for almost two hours now. I sure hope they come out soon so we can get a shot before dark, dark is coming faster than the deer. We have about a 45 minute walk back in the dark, no flash lite or anything, my first time here. The deer are coming closer now but so is the dark. Now finally after about a two and half hour wait they are on top of us. At this point we aimed our shot guns took our safeties off and aimed towards the bushes that are moving. These deer don’t have a chance after the two and a half hour wait not to mention all the squirrels and quail we could have bagged. Now back to the story, I don’t know who is more exited me are Boyd. You see this is our first deer hunt, we have killed a many of rabbits over here in the past no deer. It sounds like the deer stop in one spot to probley found something to eat. All we can do is wait and hope it don’t get dark before they show themselves. Now they are moving again getting real close. Their they are we just can’t see them clear yet. Now they are coming out fast O no. I don’t believe this its cows; we took our guns and put them back on safety. Set our guns down at this time it’s real quiet neither me are Boyd said a word, then we looked at each other and busted out laughing. Boyd said don’t tell anybody about this I said I am going to tell the whole w There is a lesson to be learned here always make sure you know what you are shooting at before you pull that trigger.

    (Luke 15:4)

    CHAPTER 3

    GRAND ISLE ADVENTURE

W hen I was doing electrical work regularly for my customers at the bingo hall the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Department worked the bingo hall police detail. They been talking to me about fishing all the time. They knew that I was always fishing anyway they decided for a group of them to make a trip. They asked me to set up a charter boat trip, they said they would they would pay my way, sounds good to me. I set up a trip with Charlie Hardison’s charter boat services in Fourchon Louisiana for it is next to Grand Isle Louisiana my regular fishing area. They also said that they would be willing to pay me as a tour guide that sounds good to me sounds like fishing for fun and money. I decided to leave early and pitch my tent at Fourchon on the beach. Like I’ve done in the past several times, a short vacation and another adventure. I told them to meet me on the beach the night before and I would get some crabs to boil. So I headed down by myself everybody else had to work. I was ready to fish, crab, flounder and have a good time. Setting up my tent getting situated and catch enough crabs for tonight for the time they arrived I would already have de crabs boiling there is nothing like being on the beach on a nice June Saturday evening. The weather was perfect with a little Southwest breeze and temperatures around 84°. Most of the guys were not experienced in saltwater fishing all they knew was fishing freshwater bass, Sac-Lait, Brim,,Bass and other varieties of fish. The way I run crab lines is with string strung out between two poles. What you do is put some weight about every 3 feet with chicken necks
