    PREFACE

The idea to write this book emanated from a deep yearning to comprehend the fundamental purpose of my life and urge to share with others the knowledge and experience I had gained in this written form.

The book is neither an academic book nor an autobiography. It is more of a talk or sermon, a narration of thoughts, observations, beliefs, and experiences I have gained from people of various walks of life as they endeavoured to fulfil their lives’ purposes.

This book’s modest intention is to shed light on the undisputable fact that the life of every individual here on earth has a reason for being and an inherent purpose to fulfil. The title, Discover Your Life’s Purpose, therefore, is an apt reminder that life is a journey and that it has been deliberately planned with a purpose designed for each individual by the very Originator of life Himself.

Unless otherwise noted, all Bible quotes are taken from the New International Version.

Where there is no purpose, there is no meaning.

    INTRODUCTION

Quite a number of young people have asked me how they could discover their true calling, their life’s purpose. Some have even asked whether everyone has a purpose and whether we must all spend our days in pursuit of this purpose.

People have diverse gifts and talents, yet it is another thing to exercise those gifts and talents and quite another still to discover and fulfil a person’s purpose using those gifts and talents, along with skills and knowledge.

I define a gift as an ability an individual is naturally endowed with. A gift s usually useful in a specific context or environment and may be useful only for a limited time. A talent, on the other hand, is a special ability that an individual is endowed with for life that can be nurtured into a more effective skill or neglected and left dormant and unproductive.

As I was compiling material for this book, I sent a questionnaire in the form of a text message to a number of my friends and acquaintances asking about the following questions:. Have you discovered your purpose in life? If so, how or what made you discover your purpose? How are you trying to achieve your purpose? I was taken aback when only one out of six people responded to the first question in the affirmative. When I asked the same questions during face-to-face interviews, those I interviewed gave similar responses.

Were my questions too difficult? I doubt it however, this was not the response rate I expected at all. In fact, I was shocked that what I thought would be common knowledge among my peers was not common knowledge, even among the high-flying young corporate professionals and Christian leaders in my country whom I interviewed and look up to. The respondents seemed to be caught off guard by these deceptively simple queries, as though the questions shocked them into realizing that they had been sleepwalking
