About this ebook

Maxine Bennett has written this book for people who are interested in taking control of their own health, helping families and friends. People who have busy lives and do not have the time, or the inclination, to delve into an abundance of "information overload" (confusion) Maxine, has spent most of her life on the subject of health and fitness, using herself, as a "Guinea Pig" to sort the "wheat from the chaff" the reason for the title of her book. "How I became a Human Guinea Pig (previously entitled, Health Tips for Busy People) both titles apply.

As she explains, this has not been easy. Attempting various diets, pills, potions, numerous side affects etc. However, all of her study has been in the natural and alternative health areas. Maxine understands that in today's society, people are overwhelmed with advice and suggestions, which constantly change. And, as a result, become confusing. Therefore, she keeps her advice simple and to the point. The reader is not required to search the book for their own health problem, as everything is clearly explained under the designated heading. Maxine gives numerous examples of her own, and family health issues, which add to the interest.

How I Became a Human Guinea Pig - Maxine Bennett

    WATER AND SALT

D id you ever stop to wonder about the perfection of nature in the making of our body? From a tiny egg and seed, it creates a complicated and intricate machine with its own built-in immune system, which is able to repair and grow, replacing dead parts with new, sending messages back and forth to the brain. Every four months, we have a complete new blood supply . Our liver can regenerate and regrow. In fact, the body that you have today is not the one you had last year. Yes, I know it may look the same, but we are discussing the inside.

Perhaps you are wondering why I mention this. Because we need to know how important our body is, and whilst we can’t trade it in, we can regrow it. If given the right nutrients, it will continue to work and keep us living a long healthy life. Most people pay more attention to how their cars run, putting in the right fuel and oil and having regular services (cars can be traded in).

So can we do any less for our all-important bodies?

Even if you are a very busy person, you have probably heard about drinking water. Eight glasses a day is the recommended amount. In spite of this, a lot of people consume hardly any water, except in tea or coffee. After all, it doesn’t have a great taste; actually, it doesn’t have any taste. Most people prefer other beverages, like milk, juice, beer, wine, cola, etc. So why should we drink water?

A few years ago, I did not believe in drinking water. After all, I was never thirsty. My belief was: eat when hungry and drink when dry. It made sense. But that was until I took a test to discover my biological age. We take a pause here to explain what a biological age is, and how it differs from our chronological age.

How many birthdays we have relates to the latter, which you probably already know, and this cannot be changed, unfortunately.

All right, back to the test for my biological age. This tests the cells in our body and at what stage they are ageing. Therefore, this can be changed.

Imagine my shock on being told that my biological age was eighty-six years at the time I was in my early sixties.

How could this be? I felt great, looked good, ate healthy, and exercised regularly. The doctor explained that I was dehydrated. I needed to drink more water, at least two litres per day. I argued that I was seldom thirsty, so why did I need to drink water? Being a busy doctor, he mentioned something about our cells. I was not really convinced and left his office, shuffling along; after all, I was now eighty-six. Actually, I thought it was quite funny and couldn’t wait to spread the news.

I believe that thinking people who are interested in staying healthy need to know why. So, whilst it was fashionable and ‘in vogue’, so to speak, how many people actually understood why they needed to drink water? Even though I know you are very busy, and perhaps do not have time to read a whole book on water, I am going to explain briefly as to why we need to drink water.

You see, I came across a book Your Body’s Many Cries for Water by Dr F. Batmanghelidj (Batman for short)

He has written several books, just about the value of water—something that doesn’t cost anything and can do no harm.

I was gobsmacked and realised how my body had been showing me that it needed water, even though I was not thirsty. Evidently, thirst is the last thing we feel. I have now lowered my biological age. It now reads ten years less than my chronological age.

Our bodies are 75 per cent water, while our brain is 85 per cent water. We are born in water. If we are sick and go to hospital, the first thing they do is connect us to an IV of water and salt.

If you want to test yourself for dehydration, just pinch the skin on the back of your hand and release. If it springs back immediately, then you are hydrated; if not, then you are dehydrated. And to what extent will be shown by how long it takes to spring back. Think of a prune, a dehydrated plum, full of wrinkles. Place it in water, the wrinkles disappear. The best moisturiser for your face, to avoid unsightly wrinkles, is water.

According to this doctor, all diseases begin with dehydration. But I am not going to discuss the whys and hows in this book.

Suffice to say, that you can make this information your knowledge, quite simply, by applying it to yourself.

The next time you have a headache, feel low on energy, or cannot think clearly, drink two glasses of water—plain—with a pinch of salt. I should point out here that the salt is important. Remember, our body is water and salt. The salt from the supermarket has been processed and lacks the minerals which occur naturally in the ocean. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase Celtic sea salt, which is available in all health food stores (half a teaspoon per day is enough).

Within thirty minutes after drinking this water with salt, you will experience how water benefits your body. However, if trying this simple remedy does not work and the problem continues, then naturally, you will look for other causes.

I used to wake up every morning with a headache. This is generally due to toxins being released into our bloodstream during the night. I now keep a bottle of water by my bedside and drink several mouthfuls. It does not take long for the pain to go away.

Aches and pains in the body also show up from dehydration.

A painkiller can work, but why take a drug when nature provides a natural pain release.

A lady I know had suffered from asthma most of her life and severe lower back pain. I suggested that when she was having an asthma attack, she place a pinch of salt on her tongue and drink a glass of water. Several weeks later, I asked her if it had worked.

She replied, ‘I don’t have the asthma any more, and, surprisingly enough, my back pain has gone.’

Another woman who looked very fit and healthy worked out at the gym. She complained of frequent fatigue, then began drinking water—problem solved!

Our brain needs water just to be able to function. Sometimes when we just can’t think straight, or become confused, it’s sending a signal: ‘I need water.’ Want to lose weight? There is a section on weight control; however, the next time you experience hunger pains and are tempted to eat, try drinking two glasses of water, and then wait for thirty minutes. You may find that you confused the thirst with the hunger signal. The body signal is the same.

Want to avoid a hangover? Either drink a glass of water between drinks, or, on arriving home, immediately drink several glasses—this dilutes the alcohol. My daughter tells me this works.

I mentioned eight glasses of water. This is average for a person—sixty to seventy kilos in body weight. Add more in proportion to weight. Having said this, bear in mind that when consuming drinks that dehydrate the body—tea, coffee, alcohol, carbonated drinks—more water is required.

If you have not been in the habit of drinking water, start slowly and build up. Watch to see that the kidneys are flushing the water out. There is a myth that drinking too much water before retiring will have you up and down to the bathroom, interrupting your sleep. This is not the case, unless you already have a weak bladder (which can also be strengthened). The body needs the water to help with detoxing during the night.

If there are kidney problems, check with your health professional. Another point to remember: if you take some form of medication, even regular painkillers, these also dehydrate you. So you will need to add more water than the usual requirement.

Another test to see if you are drinking enough water: check your urine. It should be clear or a pale yellow. If it is dark yellow or even brown, the kidneys are struggling to release the toxins.

There should also be no foul odour.

Constipation is another big problem also caused by dehydration, among other things. This will also be discussed later, in detail. Heartburn is a sign of water deficiency.

Many people have been told not to use salt in their diet, usually because they have high blood pressure. This is not true. High blood pressure is also a result of dehydration.

Your doctor may tell you otherwise because he or she is uninformed. They do not have the time to study simple remedies. Most of their time is spent studying the use of medications. So think of water as your medication. I very much doubt whether it can cure cancer or any other disease. But since our initial problems begin with dehydration, then this is where we need to start to prevent disease or even discomfort in our body.

Before I wind up this section on water, let me point out that whilst tap water will hydrate you, if you want the best of health do not drink it. Why? This is because it contains chlorine and fluoride.

Both are detrimental to our health. If you need to find out more about these products in our water supply, there is information available on web sites. I have also added some information about fluoride in the section on weight loss.

The best and most important time to drink water is first thing in the morning, to help flush the toxins, which build up during rest (lemon juice is beneficial). Two glasses at least, apart from frequently drinking during the day. Always drink two glasses of water before retiring, to help hydration during sleep.

Insomnia can be a result of dehydration. Drink water at room temperature, never ice cold, the reason being that before it can be
