    Foreword

My name is Chad Pesnell, Family Life Pastor at Cornerstone Church. I’m the proud dad of my awesome twin boys, Noah and Eli, and my beautiful daughter Brynn. My wife, Sheryl, and I have been married since 2005. We love ministry and seeing the effects of powerful books such as this one written by Loretta Moore.

I have known Loretta for fifteen years and have personally seen her stand behind what she believes and be an incredible role model to the students at the school where she teaches. I believe A Message in a Game will inspire you and deeply challenge you to become a more devoted follower of Christ and ensure that you will never watch a football game in the same way again.

I love the spiritual truths and applications that Loretta pulls from something that is so common to everyone today, which is football. I’m also a huge fan of using an everyday, common thing that we are all familiar with and allowing it push us into a more devoted relationship with our Savior.

As you read the book and begin to see how God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and you are part of God’s team, it will challenge you to step up and do something significant for our leader, Jesus. Loretta has been a teacher of God’s Word for many years and has an incredible knowledge and understanding of God’s Word and how it changes our lives, so I believe you will be greatly blessed as you read this book.

If you love football and/or love Jesus, this could be one of the most important books you’ll ever read.

    Introduction

A message is communication passed or sent between persons by writing or by signals with the intent of providing information. A game is any specific amusement or sport involving physical or mental competition under specific rules(Webster’s Dictionary). Football is a competitive team sport known for its roughness (life is sometimes like a football game). Therefore the title of this book was chosen with the intended purpose of communicating the hidden teaching in the game of football. This game is one of physical contact. These teams use strategic plans to play the game.

Many forms of communication are used in this game to help the players communicate so they can effectively run the plays. Speech is one method used to instruct the players. The quarterback can be heard calling out the plays to run. The coach writes out the plays or prints them and places them in a playbook to help the team better prepare for their opponents. The players are not the only ones who need to communicate; the referee, the coach, and the quarterback all use hand signals to move the ball down the field.

Thus the book is entitled A Message in a Game. It is a written message communicating the biblical teachings in the game of football. Yes, it may seem a little strange to you, and I must admit it sounded strange to me too. But I have come to realize that Jesus wants to get the message of salvation out. In His ministry, He used things that were familiar to the audience, teaching them in parables. Parables are stories, especially those of Jesus, told to provide a vision of life, especially life in God’s kingdom. Parable means a putting alongside for purposes of comparison and new understanding (Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary, 2004). Thus this is written to convey a message to those who have not chosen their eternal team. It is to help those who have entered the game to be an effective member of the team and to cheer them on as they finish the game.

Why? He wants more players on His team. He is not willing that any should perish. He wants to load up His team. How can He reach such a vast audience? This is
