    PROLOGUE

D ARREN, SI R HATEES WANTS everyone to gather in the hall im mediately. Joana looke d at her brother, the teenage boy sitt ing on the small cubi cle bed. It’s urgent, h e says.

The boy did not respond but stood up and licked his lips. He walked slowly towards the cupboard and opened it with his pale hands. He rummaged through the cupboard and finally found what he had wanted, his royal black cloak, which came down to his knees.

Joana approached the boy and placed her hand on his shoulder, giving it a squeeze. Darren… I… She let out a long sigh. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry about Sam. He was a good friend of yours. He didn’t die in vain.

Darren put on his black cloak, just like Joana, and pulled the hood over his head. I’ll never forget him, and I’ll make sure I’ll have my revenge for him. He spoke for the first time after his long silence and left the room.

Joana thought she had better not disturb her brother for a few days and followed him out of the room.

The siblings headed towards the hall. They weren’t alone; many others in black cloaks were walking in the same direction. Some of them were middle-aged people. Some were quite old, while some were very young. Some mothers carried babies.

While following Darren, a sudden thought struck Joana: Why did Sir Hatees call everyone for a private meeting? Private meetings are usually for the chosen ones only, and not all are required to attend.

Joana and Darren attended every meeting even though they just had turned sixteen that year. Most who attended were in their late twenties or early thirties.

Joana put her thoughts in the back of her mind as she entered the huge, silver-colored door with the golden carvings. The hallway was gray. The carpet was gray with black patterns, and the walls were gray with golden carvings everywhere. When she was a little girl, Joana used to wonder what the carvings meant.

All those carvings on the walls are old legends, her mother had told her before she passed away, legends from the olden days.

    Joana?

    Joana blinked.

    Are you dreaming?

    She looked at Darren.

    What’s wrong? he asked.

Joana rubbed her arms. Oh, nothing, she said softly. I was just thinking about Mom.

Darren sighed. He took his place at the front row, and Joana sat beside him.

Within minutes the hall was packed with people wearing black coats.

Joana looked nervous, but Darren seemed impatient to hear the urgent news. The murmuring crowd sounded as impatient as he did.

Joana noticed an old man walking slowly from one of the eight doors. He was followed by three companions who were not as old as him. He wore a long white robe, which Darren thought was too long for him, and climbed the steps to the stage where he could see everyone below.

Psst… it’s Sir Hatees, Joana hissed in Darren’s ear.

The boy’s blue eyes immediately fixed on the old man.

Sir Hatees’s voice echoed around the hall. Silence now.

Everyone grew quiet. Not even a fly dared to buzz.

Sir Hatees continued. We are all gathered here today for a private meeting, and for the first time, I’ve called everyone to attend. Sir Hatees stopped for a moment to take a sip of water and continued, I’m afraid this urgent news is terrible. It’s about the lampirs.

A chorus of angry voices burst out from the crowd.

Silence, please, Sir Hatees roared. The old man was furious. It’s not just the lampirs I’m worried about. It’s about the humans too. The lampirs are building an army to attack the humans. Sir Hatees wiped sweat off his forehead.

A chorus of shocked gasps echoed from the crowd.

What? Joana cried. Her eyes were as round as marbles.

    Darren looked concerned.

Please, be silent, a pale-looking Sir Hatees said into the microphone.

The crowd calmed down a bit.

"Since the earth was made, we have been vampires, and our duty is to protect the humans. This information about an impending attack is
