    Dedication

Everyone needs a place or circumstance where they feel completely safe and thoroughly at home. For me that place is a Body of believers called Concord Baptist Church. The story that follows is a heart effort dedicated to the staff at Concord. That staff is a major factor in making Concord the haven that it is. May God surround them with His protection and bless them richly!

W ardell Jones said later that it all happened because of the critters, just like the night Christ was born, when the animals talked. She said that they were all God’s beloved creatures, and that God, as He often did, used those creatures to fulfill His purposes. Many agreed with her that this was so. Of course, very few people disagreed with Wardell, and if they did, they tended to keep it private.

It began simply enough, on a gray Thursday in January. This particular day was rainy and cold, with a stiff wind. In Chicago such a day would be considered mild, especially in January, but in North Georgia it was real winter.

Pastor Tom left his home around eight thirty that morning and stopped to get a coffee. A cup of hot wake-me-up from Starbucks was his one indulgence, and he relished his first sip of mocha. He reasoned that coffee wasn’t too bad if he skipped the whipped cream on top, never mind that his doctor called it dessert in a cup.

He parked his car in the lot at Faith Baptist, made sure his trench coat was securely fastened over his muffler, and stepped out of the vehicle, briefcase in one hand and coffee in the other. As he turned slightly to press the lock button on his keys, something huge dive-bombed him and grabbed for the top of his head. He remembered thinking that the dive bomber made no sound at all. He ducked sideways but whatever it was managed to get hold of his scalp and scrape it; his coffee went flying to the right and his briefcase to the left. The large bird who had attacked him swooped skillfully through the air and landed on the bell tower. Pastor Tom ended up on his knees but nothing seemed to be injured except his dignity. Well, he thought, not an inappropriate posture for a pastor. As he scrambled to his feet he glanced around, hoping that no one had noticed the incident. He couldn’t see anyone at the door or windows so he imagined he was spared that embarrassment. Too bad about the coffee. His briefcase was intact and still closed, thank God.

    He entered
