    A fast-paced story describing the reaction of world citizens to the realization that Earth is dying from the constant abuse it has endured from humans. The storys primary focus centers on the United States and its plan to cope with a sick and dying population and a way to protect future humans from extinction. Project EGG begins with Phase One of its plan, allowing only healthy women to donate their newborn infants to the Project. These infants are labeled EGGYs and are admitted into underground domiciles, which offer a protective environment, receiving expert care by a programmed robotic workforce.

    The domiciles function to grow foodstuffs, to reproduce more EGGYs, and to educate selected EGGYs to live in a Martian settlement. In its sixteenth year of operation, Phase Two of Project EGG appoints human professionals in good health to serve as domicile directorsan ecologist, a neuropsychologist, and a humanitarian are given the task to select the best EGGYs for the transhumance to the Martian settlement. Since birth, Project EGG has controlled and indoctrinated the now-sixteen-year-old EGGY candidates to believe that there is a future for them in the settlement built by a robotic workforce on Mars. After the domicile directors are well established in their task, Project EGG issues a surprise announcement that the Planet Ships manifest to Mars includes the selected EGGYs, as well as some unexpected passengers.

      PROLOGUE

      O World, I Cannot Hold Thee Close Enough!

      E arth can no longer support life. Catastrophic conditions actually began when humankind missed its chance to turn Earth around; away from desolation. Compounded by the recent use of nuclear weaponry causing devastation to the land and its people, the scale has now tipped into a doomsday mode. World leaders have issued a moratorium on wars and frantically place their focus on using every resource and every known technology to save Mother Earth. Over millennia, destructive conditions insidiously took hold bringing Earth to ruin and unfit to nurture. A combination of destructive forces put plants, animals and humans at risk of extinction. The warming, acidic oceans failing to produce a food chain for marine life, melted glaciers causing oceans to overflow onto land masses, and, destruction of freshwater ecosystems resulting in the world’s river waters becoming depleted and polluted contributed to the destruction of life on Earth. A disappearing ozone layer due to uncontrolled CO2, methane and other greenhouse gases continue to annihilate Earth’s air. The worldwide space industry using manned and unmanned cargo deliveries smashing onto the Earth’s surface without warning causing increased destru ction.

      Humans suffer physical problems from solar radiation causing malignant diseases to run rampant while medical treatments only compromise the immune system putting the sick at even greater risk. The psychological effect of Earth’s demise on humans provoke ambivalent feelings toward the Sun; valuing its beneficial rays, yet, witnessing its destructive force causing morbidity and death. Such is the aura of despair and gloom felt the world over by a questioning human race. Can Earth be restored to support life? Can a new home be found for humankind?

      More than a century of galactic travel for that elusive celestial body harboring life has finally ended. Time, money, and energy spent on that cause is now directed toward the worsening conditions on Earth.

      Also, the sanctioning of world governments, astrophysicists and other scientists have now refocused their efforts toward planet Mars.

      The red planet and its moons had been explored from spaceships, orbiters, and lunar land cruisers. As calculated, every two years when Earth and Mars are closest to one another trips to Mars become shorter and use less fuel allowing more frequent visits to the permanent Martian laboratories.

      The latest advances in propulsion introduced spaceships equipped with close to warp-like drives having the ability for space transportation to reach Mars in less than three months. Exploration records from land rovers crawling across the surface of Mars yielded volumes of data. For instance, the temperature of Mars is colder having a very thin atmosphere which is mostly carbon dioxide with barely a trace of oxygen and water. Fortunately, huge deposits of water below the Martian surface exist in the form of ice which can be used in the production of oxygen. Mars is smaller than Earth. Her geography is somewhat similar to that on Earth deep canyons and craters, and huge rock formations. An exception is seen in its greater dry desert-like terrain. Mars has a surface gravity far less than that on Earth, which has a detrimental effect on human bone and muscle. Such is the dilemma; humans can no longer live on Earth’s polluted terrain without specialized garments and oxygen masks. At the same time, without protective and supportive equipment humans cannot survive on Mars. That being so, Earthlings and their governments must now consider Mars the only available planet on which to stake claims, excavate, and build a habitat for humans.

      Presently, by way of genetic engineering, selected healthy adolescents under the care of a domestic robotic work force have survived in Earth’s underground domiciles. This story is about a plan to relocate them to live on Mars.
