About this ebook

Sin. Its such a common word, especially in the Christian culture. Even though its a little word in the dictionary, its a very big word in our lives and how God views us as a people. Each and every person who has ever lived on earth, except for Jesus Christ, has sinned. We are all born into sin. Although our human nature doesnt like to consider ourselves as sinners and we often struggle with calling ourselves sinners, its a fact of life that we cant ignore. What do we do about sin? Do we try to deny or hide from the fact that we sin? Do we admit to ourselves that we sin? Do we look on our sins as not so bad compared to other peoples? Do we feel guilty about our sin or only regret the sin when weve been caught? Do we enjoy the sin and not want to give it up? Do we think of sin as really bad or just what everyone does, and its a part of life? Merriam-Websters Dictionary calls sin reprehensible. If a dictionary gives the meaning of sin as something so horrible sounding, what in the world does our God who is Holy, think about sin? Has our prayer life become stagnant because of our sin? Can we actually separate ourselves from a loving Father because of our sin? Even when Christ lives in us and His blood has washed away our sin, we still sin and will until the day we pass from this earth. How do we draw closer to God when we know that we have sinned and havent repented?

    Preface

This book began as a personal journal for me a few years ago after I heard a pastor preach about growing in our relationship with God. In seeking a deeper relationship with God, the pastor said to begin by asking God to reveal our sins to us so there would be nothing standing between the Father and us. If we believe in Jesus and have received Him as our Savior through His salvation, His blood has cleansed us of all sin—once and for all. However, we are all born into sin and continue to have a sinful nature, even though we are forgiven in Christ.

When we sin, we feel separated from God because we have broken our fellowship, or communion with Him. It’s not that He doesn’t love us anymore, but our sins cause our much-needed relationship with our heavenly Father to be severed or strained. We need to seek mercy from our Father, whom we have grieved. When our children disobey us, we feel the hurt, tension, and anguish that their disobedience can cause, and this can put a significant strain on the parent-child relationship. If the child tells us he is sorry, he is admitting he messed up and wants us to forgive him. Until the child owns up to what he has done and apologizes, the parent-child relationship will continue to suffer as a result. As parents, we long for that relationship to be restored quickly. We don’t stop loving them because they have been disobedient, but we hope they realize the hurt and disappointment it has brought to us as their parents. When King David sinned, he felt physically sick until he confessed his sins to God.

When I kept silence [before I confessed], my bones wasted away through my groaning all the day long. For day and night Your hand [of displeasure] was heavy upon me; my moisture was turned into the drought of summer. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord [continually unfolding the past till all is told]—then You [instantly] forgave me the guilt and iniquity of my sin. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! (Psalm 32:3–5 AB)

It took bringing his sins to his Father in heaven before King David was able to experience relief and cleansing from his sins.

Prior to beginning this journey with my heavenly Father (through a deep longing to draw closer to Him), I thought that I pretty much knew my sins. I was used to saying a blanket prayer that I hoped would cover everything I had done: Father, please forgive me of all my sins. If I knew of a particular sin that I had committed, I would ask God for forgiveness specifically for it instead of the blanket prayer. Even though God already knew my sins, I believe He wanted me to take ownership of them and admit my sins to Him and to myself. Therefore, as I began seeking a deeper relationship with God, I asked Him to reveal all of my sins to me. Little did I realize all the sins I had actually committed, or am even capable of committing. I became aware of sins that I had never confessed to God—many things I didn’t know were sins, even things I do on a daily basis. Our sins separate us from God and can cause His blessings for us, and our prayer life, to be null and void. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear (Isaiah 59:2 NIV). It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen anymore (Isaiah 59:2 NLT). Any unconfessed sin hinders our relationships with a personal and loving God. At times, I have also attempted to hide some sins and bury them so deep that I thought I could forget them. However, nothing we’ve buried escapes God’s knowledge of them, no matter how hard we try to wipe them from our memory. God wants to bring them out into the open, shine His light on them, have us confess to Him what we have done, and then turn from the sin. Thankfully, He is ready and willing to forgive, no matter what the sin. I think one of the hardest
