    Author Bio

    Dedication

This book is lovingly dedicated to my grandson, Dillon Heimerl, whose actual portrait appears in the cover art. The inspiration for this novella is Dillon and his out-of-body experiences that started when he was three years old. It is appropriate that the protagonist is modeled on him.

    Chapter 1

    Dillon’s Rocking Bear Chair

D illon loved to sit in his rocking chair in the shape of a bear. This chair had been one of Dillon’s favorite possessions since he was one year old. On weekdays, Dillon spent his days at Babies and Ladies, which is what he called his pre-school. But as soon as he got home, he would head for the living room of his grandparents’ house and slide into his bear chair holding his beloved stuffed animal, Bud Dog. There he would eat his after-school snack, which was waiting for him on a low, folding table in front of the bear chair. The living room TV would be turned to his favorite cartoon show.

It wasn’t until Dillon was three years old that Dillon’s grandfather, who was a portrait painter, noticed that Dillon would stop rocking and sit motionless like a statue in the bear chair, seemingly in a daze as he clutched his stuffed toy, Bud Dog. When this happened, one could touch him or talk to him, but he wouldn’t respond. It was as though he had fallen asleep with his eyes open.

One day Grandfather decided to find out what was really happening. For ten minutes he watched Dillon sitting in his bear chair totally motionless. Sitting on the couch, he kept his eyes on Dillon, saying nothing. Then, noticing that Dillon had started to move and look around, Grandfather said, Dillon, did you go somewhere?

    Dillon said, Yes, I flew.

Grandfather asked, Were you flying in the sky?

    Yes, flying with the birds.

    Was it a dream?

    No, I was really flying.

What did you see when you were flying?

"I could look down and see the roof of this house. And down
