    Dedication

To Anna my mother-in-law. I trust that by reading this book you will be able to help those who suffer from phobias. It’s the will of God for you to help others overcome their fears of every kind. Whether they are afraid of flying (aviophobia) or afraid of death (thanato/necrophobia), you can help them.

Norman Cousins said, ‘People are never more insecure than when they become obsessed with their fears at the expense of their dreams.’

People who focus on their fears do not grow to their full potential.

To those who have been plagued by fear of any nature. You can overcome them all. God’s will is that you enjoy life free of trauma and insecurities.

To God who inspired me to write because He cares for humanity. He created you, and He knows what you are afraid of. Just as a parent would do anything to keep their child safe, so does God, and He wants you to know how to deal with all negative energy. The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth throughout this book in order for you to understand what to do when fear shows up.

To my family, thank you for allowing me to take time off to write. Your sacrifice is a worthwhile seed into the many lives transformed through the reading of this book. Dakujem.

    Introduction

    Autumn 2007

The hills and the valleys are full of beautiful colours. The trees are preparing for the winter. They shed their leaves early, leaving a carpet of colourful leaves on the ground. Kids run around kicking the leaves from side to side. The water flowing down the streams is full of floating leaves. It is just so beautiful. A glider glides above in his glider. He wants to enjoy every moment before it all soon changes.

Whatever the form of fear it is not the actual event, situation,

or object that is the real problem; it is how you perceive it.

Birds chirp excitedly, and the warm breeze brushes Bobby’s cheeks. The freshness of the place stimulates his thoughts. ‘I could live here forever,’ he mumbled to himself. Memories flash before his eyes. He remembers when he was young. He had grown up in this place but somehow had missed all the beauty. ‘How come I never noticed all this?’ he thought to himself, looking at Jessica. His daughter just smiled back. She had been trying so hard to hide her tears. Her mouth felt dry, and her heart pumped faster and faster.

Acting brave was all that mattered now. Her fears of losing another loved one so soon was choking her and made her tremble with fear. Turning her head away, she quickly wiped her tears with a tissue. Thoughts of her mum flooded back in her mind. She recollected how sad and traumatising it was to see her mother die of cancer. Her chest felt tighter and tighter. She held tightly to the wheelchair, as she felt dizzy. Fear gripped her young heart. ‘Why did my parents have to suffer so much,’ she wondered! It is three o’clock in the afternoon and nearing time for tea. She applies the brakes and adjusts the cushion supporting Bobby’s back.

Sitting beside him on the bench she goes, ‘Dad! I want you to promise me that you’ll never forget this place and this moment we are together. I want you to promise me that you’ll never leave me alone.’ Bobby’s eyes met her searching eyes. ‘She looks so much like her mother,’ he observed. He remembered how little she was just a few years ago. ‘Illness can be a time killer,’ he muttered to himself. She had become distant after her mother died of cancer two years earlier.

Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.—Basil King

He had become so distraught he did not see the truck coming. All he remembers is waking up in a hospital bed, wheelchair bound. He straightened up a little and, reaching out for her hand, he squeezed it gently. ‘I promise you not to leave you, honey.’ The words hardly came out. He had recently developed lung cancer that had spread rapidly. He had three months to live. Therefore, he had suggested that Jessica should come and take him out to look around for a while. From deep within, he felt terrified by death and was not prepared to die.

All his years, he ignored the subject about death, but now, he had a tough choice to make. Many people would not identify with this story. What is common nonetheless is that many are not prepared to face death. They are equally plagued with the fear of death. Fear, whether of death, heights, water, failure, rejection, and betrayal or success can have devastating consequences.

Fear makes one feel intimidated. It makes you feel insecure about a situation or an object. We must all take personal responsibility to destroy all manner of fear—whatever its form. I want to show you that fear does not have to rule your life. I want to help you free yourself from any frightening emotions that you no longer want. This book will help you identify certain areas in your life held captive by fear and will show you how to deal with it.

You will never enjoy life to the full until you face up to your phobias head-on. Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid, Basil King once said. My belief is that if somebody can learn better, he can do better. By the time you are halfway through this book, you will have learnt enough ways on how to confront all fearful feelings and negative emotions ruining your life. You will also have learnt what to do when they show up. Whether they have plagued you since childhood or they are more recent traumatic stress disorders and panic attacks, you can overcome them. What you need is to become bold enough to trust yourself and God. All fear is rooted in the fear that what God promised will not happen. This is a tactic of the devil to cause you to doubt God’s promise that He will never leave you nor forsake you.

The devil wants you to think that God’s protection will not be enough to cover you in what you are facing. ‘Fortune and Love befriend the bold’ (Ovid). Fear spans a spectrum of intensity from insecurity to terror, and although it is at the milder end of the continuum, insecurity is the most common manifestation of fear. Fear makes you feel vulnerable and weak. However, to beat it you have to be strong; you have to challenge your fear even when you feel like running away or hiding. You might not even be aware of your fears at this moment, and that is because you are so used to them, but they might be stopping you from having a healthy relationship, from getting the job you want, or from fulfilling your dreams. Through the principles outlined in this book, you will discover and confront your limitations so you can live the life you truly desire and deserve. Having seen so many lives tormented by fear and after counselling scores of scarred and scared lives, I realised that my efforts were very limited. My research showed that there are millions of people, both men and women, young and old, who struggle with anxiety disorders every day. It is disturbing yet true. How could I then reach out and help all those people? My conclusion pointed in one direction—put it in writing. Make it plain on tablets of paper and let the book become the medium through which to counsel en masse. Like Martin Luther King said, ‘There are many ways to change the world. Find yours. The world changes when people have the imagination to dream, and the strength to act. (emphasis mine)’ I found mine because the issues that affect billions of people world over keep me on my toes. I have imagination and through it ‘dreamt’ this book up, and with much strength and perseverance, my bold actions have landed this book on your laps.

I am very concerned indeed. Fear plays a major part in people’s lives. It interferes with their daily activities, and that is not right. Fear also grips nations and continents. Many times, fear takes the entire world by storm. It MUST be confronted. It MUST be eradicated from our minds. Fear MUST go. Later you will learn that fear is not just an emotion but also a spirit. It is this spirit that seeks to cause havoc in your life and the cosmos. It has held many captives at will. However, in deep darkness, even the light of a candle burns brighter. That is why I wrote this book. Learn from it. Put what it says into practice and your life will never be the same again.

    Enjoy it.

    Chapter 1

    Fear As You Know It

    1.tif

Fear is a personal thing; what scares one person may not feature on someone else’s radar. Fear robs you of peace. Whatever the form of fear it is not the actual event, situation, or object that is the real problem; it is how you perceive it.

Fear invokes strong unpleasant feelings, stress, a worry perhaps, anxiety, or being frightened. It also involves such emotions as panic, dread, horror, terror, and trauma—you name it. All these are true. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, the definition for FEAR is the following:

    Fright—sudden, usually momentary, great fear

Dread—strong fear, especially of what one is powerless to avoid

    Terror—intense, overpowering fear

Horror—a combination of fear and aversion or repugnance

    Panic—sudden frantic fear, often groundless

Alarm—fright aroused by the first realisation of danger

Dismay—robs one of courage or the power to act effectively

Consternation—often paralysing, characterised by confusion and helplessness

Trepidation—dread characteristically marked by trembling or hesitancy

PHOBIA on the other hand is thus defined:

    •     A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.

    •     A strong fear, dislike, or aversion.
