CHAPTER 1
Running into the night
Maybe it was simply her heart that was freezing with fear, but her bedroom seemed colder than usual that night. The whole house seemed like a corpse; there was a cold silence and her heart played like a drum kit as she slowly opened the window that creaked stiffly with every push.
That night the wind was so cold that her body froze as she finally opened the window fully. The wind crashed against her body; her fearful thoughts were somehow blown away and the night seemed to whisper to her ‘come and play’.
She clutched the window and got ready to jump. She shut her eyes and her body inhaled the moment that would lead to her freedom. The cold breeze caressed her skin and danced with her hair. She opened her eyes to see the only source of light available, the full moon at midnight.
Her feet were ready to take off, but her eyes shot open wide with fear when she suddenly realized the distance between them and the black hole she called her garden during day light. Her bravery seemed to have been devoured by her fear of heights. She let go of the window and launched herself backwards instead, crashing onto her bed. Her heart pounded against her chest.
The wall clock in her room seemed to echo through her hollow mind. She was unsure of what to do next. Her mind played a boxing match; her daring and reckless side wore red boxing gloves, while her strong and sensible side wore white ones. Her head agonized during the intense fight until the reckless gladiator slaughtered the sensible one.
After launching her legs out of her bed, she used her upper body to force herself into a standing up position. Silently, she made her way towards her bedroom door and slowly turned the knob, which made a loud ‘click’ noise that echoed through the hollow corridor.
Once again, her heart froze with fear and she held her breath. Her muscles relaxed to the customary sound of her brother’s snores in the room next door. She opened the door, stopping at every creak, and made her way towards the stairs on the tips of her toes.
She successfully got to the bottom of the stairs. She scanned her surroundings; the only source of light came from the moonlight that shone from outside the kitchen’s glass door. She reached for the front door and held the cold knob. She twisted and it opened slightly. However, in almost the same movement, she shut it and hid behind her living room door as she heard the top of the stairs creak with footsteps.
As she heard the footsteps go into the kitchen, she kept herself still like a statue, with her hands clutched together into a fist and biting her bottom lip in anxiety and fear. She heard the squeaking sound of the cupboard opening in the kitchen and a glass making contact with the counter.
She slowly and steadily peaked her head around the door and saw her brother pouring milk into a glass and swallowing some sort of pill laid next to it. Several questions raced through her mind.
She took a quick and silent step back into the shadows, to prevent him from seeing her on his way back up to his bedroom. His pace up the stairs was heavy and slow; every floor board creaked. Once he was out of hearing range, she quickly and cautiously made her way out of the door and raced towards an alleyway that leads to a park called Mansfield.
Finally, she was out of her comfort zone. Once again she felt the wind dance with her hair, the stars smiled brightly at her and the full moon pierced her soul. She fell in love with the night.
CHAPTER 2
Encounter past dawn
His pace was swift. A sweat drop fell across his cheek from his eyebrow. His breathing fastened as his heart rate sped up. Looking from side to side, he saw nothing but empty fields of grass and the cold morning breeze blowing the leaves out of the mid-autumn trees.
‘Oh my days! Where would she be?’ he asked himself on the edge of panic. He ran up a hill, a damp hill, slipping half way up and sliding back down to the bottom.
‘Shit,’ he swore to himself. He cautiously but quickly made his way to the top of the hill. Once he reached the top, he took in a deep breath and scanned his surroundings. His heart skipped a beat as he found her. A fragile looking, little girl laid against the trunk of a large tree, seemingly asleep. He ran over to her and knelt beside her.
‘Aurora, wake up,’ he called out, gently shaking her shoulder and sweeping her light blonde hair off of her face. She slowly opened her gentle sapphire blue eyes and blinked a couple of times. She rubbed her eyes with the palm of her hands, then stretched her arms as far up as she could, letting out a deep yawn. He let out a sigh of relief.
‘How long have you been down here?’ Ryan asked giving her a stern look.
‘Dunno, three or four hours? I left about quarter to one,’ she replied dismissively.
Ryan’s eyes widened in shock. ‘You are joking? It’s half eight in the bloody morning now! What on earth were you doing all this time?’ he exclaimed in disbelief.
She shrugged her shoulders. ‘Sleep . . . that’s pretty much it,’ she said without much care. Ryan just stared at her in utter disbelief and shock in silence for a few moments.
‘You’re nuts,’ he stated.
‘What?’ she asked looking up at him.
‘You’ve lost it haven’t ya?’ he stated still in shock.
‘What are you on about?’ she asked, giving him a confused stare.
He let out a short chuckle. ‘Do you even realize what could’ve happened to you?’ he asked, but she simply shrugged her shoulders.
‘Better than what happens in that dump we live in,’ she murmured angrily.
‘Are you having a laugh?’ he exclaimed. She stared blankly at him. ‘You could’ve been killed! You’re a little girl . . .’
‘We turn twelve next Tuesday,’ she snapped at him, cutting him off.
Ryan slapped his forehead and shook his head. ‘And you really think that makes you strong enough to not get hurt by a man? You could’ve been killed you idiot!’ he shouted at her.
‘I don’t care! Anything is better than being with him!’ she shouted back while standing up. Ryan was taken aback by this. ‘I don’t want to go back Ryan, I don’t want to keep getting hurt!’ she carried on shouting. Her voice trembled and tears began to form in her eyes.
Ryan looked up at her with pitiful eyes. He stood up and slowly approached her. He was no more than two inches taller than her. She looked up into his sapphire blue eyes with tears streaming down her rosy cheeks. He wrapped his slim arms around her slender shoulders and gently pulled and held her against his chest.
‘Please don’t cry,’ he whispered pleadingly. Aurora buried her small face into his chest and whipped her tears against his grey cotton t-shirt.
‘I just can’t do it . . . You’re the one that can always deal right and give him more money . . . and . . . when . . . I don’t . . . do . . . it right . . . he . . .’ she said stuttering into tears.
‘Shh . . . there, there, it’s alright,’ he said reassuringly, while gently rubbing her back. He cupped her chin between his index finger and thumb and whipped her tears away from her cheeks with his thumb.
‘He won’t anymore. He’s going to quit. He promised, remember?’ he said placing his hands on your shoulders.
‘Yeah right, he said that last time . . .’ she said as she stepped backwards and away from him. She rolled up her sleeve, revealing a nasty bruise on her arm. Ryan’s facial expression dropped into a deep form of discontent.
‘Now do you understand, why I don’t what to go back? He always says he loves me and is going to change. But he never does!’ she exclaimed.
‘But he always gives us stuff . . . that makes me feel really happy, weird, but happy . . .’ Ryan said confused.
‘He doesn’t really love us Ryan, can’t you see? How can he? When he hurts us so much?’ she asked pleadingly.
‘Well, what is love really?’ he asked.
‘That’s not my point!’ she shouted.
Ryan dropped his gaze to the floor. ‘True . . . Look, I’m sorry.’ Aurora felt shocked as he said this. She was about to ask why, but he stopped her by saying, ‘For not being the sort of brother I should be really . . . I promise I’ll protect you. Now and forever,’ he said looking deep into her equally sapphire blue eyes. A small smile played on her lips as she leapt onto him, swinging her arms around his neck and pulling him into a tight hug.
‘You’re the best brother ever! Pinky promise that we will always be there for each other
