PREFACE
I see things differently. The organization I have been deeply involved with for many years has been struggling and I could feel the tension rising. I went to bed one night thinking about the situation and wondering what I could do
differently to be a part of the solution to the struggle.
That night I had a dream/vision that summed things up in a way that frightened me. The vision was of two hands gripping a pickle jar; one hand holding the bottom and one holding the top. The lid was being tightened to the point where I knew either the jar would break or the hands holding it would break. And I knew what I could do to be part of the solution.
When the pain of the circumstance you are in becomes greater than the pain of changing the circumstance, you are sufficiently motivated to make the change regardless of the cost.
It was time for me to face my fears and embrace who I am. I see and feel things differently and that has not always been pleasant or well received.
I have faced many fears in writing this book, some of which you will read about. I have embraced who I am, what I see and how I feel with the support of family, friends and teachers. I cherish the knowledge gained from those who have shown me love and those that have caused me pain.
I have been told many times that I am a good teacher. I have used this ability subtly all my life. I am a good teacher, not because I tell you what I think you need to know. I am a good teacher because I guide you to what you want to know.
INTRODUCTION
Do you know how to cook a frog? You put the frog in a pot of water that is cool and then bring the temperature up slowly. As the water warms, the frog is lulled into a trance-like state and doesn’t even notice that the water is getting hotter and hotter. By the time the frog notices, if it ever does, it is too late.
Why tell this story? My career was in a comfortable sleep state and I thought I would just cruise into retirement at that point. I had been lulled into the status quo for several years. My focus was on taking care of my aging mother and working to make a living. I was mentally exhausted.
With her passing in 2010, I slowly realigned my focus back to work and career. When planned major changes within the organization seemed like a reality and I was offered a chance to be a part of it, I said yes with open arms. It was exactly what I needed to recharge my batteries, so to speak.
I have had the knowledge to create change for many years, but did not feel the openness within the organization as a whole to share my knowledge. As you will read in the book, I had my personal challenges with coming forward also.
However, my knowledge did not go to waste. I was working with my team, with the management in my
